Regrarians/Very Edible Gardens Earthworks Practicum (Monday, 14 Apr 2014 10:00 AM - Friday, 18 Apr 2014 04:00 PM)
Want to do earthworks on your property but don't know where to start or how to manage & design an earthworks project? If YES, then this is the practicum for you!
This five-day hands-on workshop will cover all aspects of designing and implementing earthworks including roads, diversion drains, dams & wetlands. For the last six months Very Edible Gardens have been working with Bendigo-based non-profit Regrarians Ltd.'s designer, Darren J Doherty on the keyline and permaculture-inspired design of Yandoit Farm, a beautiful 140-acre property in Yandoit, Central Victoria on the Jim Crow Creek. Yandoit Farm is owned by Lisa & Michael Jackson and is currently a beef cattle operation running 84 head with plans to expand into broadscale agroforestry and other livestock systems.
You can see Darren's initial design sketch process for the property here:
This workshop shares the practical experience of putting a design into practice, and involves working with Jennings Earthmoving Services (Castlemaine VIC) whom Darren has worked with for 20 years. Over the week of the 14-18 April 2014 we are building two 2-3ML dams, access roads (that also collect water), lockpipe installation, diversion drains, culverts, plus a couple of wetlands. We'll also have a Yeomans Keyline Plow (owned by Regrarians Ltd.) doing its great work including laying the 50mm water grid for the property.
It will be a busy week, with a stack of activities going on. Darren will be the lead facilitator with our support.
You are welcome to camp on farm or find accommodation nearby (site is within 20min from Daylesford & Castlemaine). You will be well fed from onsite gardens and various local suppliers.
We’ll be filming the whole process, so be prepared to be on camera.
