In this show, Marcie Kaufman explores the ever evolving, dynamic landscape and architecture of New York City. Kaufman photographs buildings, storefronts, and iconic structures throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, then cuts into, paints on, or applies decorative interior surface materials to certain digital archival prints and Polaroids, leaving other prints unaltered. The result makes change visible, foregrounding the effects of age, time, and weather. Kaufman blurs the line between past and present, painting and photography, abstraction and representation, the mechanical and the handmade. She captures the layers of New York, an old city eternally reinventing itself.
