EXPLORING INDIAN TEXTILES

This course explores the extraordinarily rich textile traditions of India. Discover the regional variations of Indian textiles from the Punjab and Gujarat to Bengal and the Coromandel Coast. Understand and appreciate the designs, patterns and techniques of production as well as the stylistic development of the motifs like the boteh or paisley design in Kashmir shawls. Discover Indian trade textiles to the west like chintz and to the east in South east Asia. Includes object study excursions on Indian textiles to the Victoria & Albert Museum's Nehru Gallery of Indian art, a gallery of Indian Textiles and a behind the scenes session at the V&A Clothworkers Centre. Object study session from the lecturer's private collection of Indian textiles is included.
