Following its success back in January, TENDER NAPALM will return to St James Cavalier for four performances only. After that it will run for 2 weeks starting 10th August at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Philip Ridley's 2010 play marks a change of direction for the acclaimed, ever restless and maverick writer. Tender Napalm is a high-impact, high-concept two handed play which explores the landscape that is a relationship between a man and a woman. Explosive, poetic, brutal and ultimately redemptive, the play weaves a compelling theatrical tapestry to re-examine and re-define the language of love.
TENDER NAPALM is an abstract piece about a young couple struggling to relive their love after an unnamed trauma. They tell stories, both fantastical and real, and try to figure where their relationship stands. Producer Adrian Buckle describes it as a very physical piece with poetic language that is equally funny and heart wrenching at the same time. The play is cool, slick and savagely romantic. There are no defined settings, narratives or characters. Instead, Tender Napalm is 70 minutes of real time drama: simply a man and woman dissecting their relationship through a mixture of memory, fantasy, and a mixture of the two. And, by doing this, they touch upon zeitgeist concerns of violence, war and faith. It is a showcase of the imaginative, fantastical and magical poeticisms Ridley can achieve from the bleak and brutal themes of war and destruction.
Directing the piece is Toni Attard, one of Malta’s most creative directors. The play stars Bettina Paris as the WOMAN and Andre Agius as the MAN. Also helping out with this production are Sandra Mifsud on choreography and Lizzie Eldridge on direction.
