We're having a party to celebrate the opening of the Gallery.
The Cape May Artists’ Cooperative is celebrating its new location with a grand opening celebration on Saturday, May 3. The festivities begin at 4pm with a ribbon cutting ceremony with co-op members and local officials. Senator Jeff Van Drew and Assemblyman Bob Andrzejczak along with West Cape May Mayor Pam Kaithern are expected to be on hand for the festivities. The gallery is located at 122 Sunset Boulevard, West Cape May. Refreshments will be served and local musician Jimm Ross will provide entertainment during the evening.
For the month of May, the artists have embraced “wood” in all its wonder as their theme. For the woodworkers in the group, it’s a literal interpretation with functional and decorative works created from exotic hardwoods, driftwood and recycled pieces. For the painters and photographers, it a figurative interpretation, focusing on local landscapes, often featuring the iconic Higbee’s Beach voodoo tree. In whatever medium, each artist expresses his or her personal vision.
The Cape May Artists' Cooperative Gallery is a group of local artists who have joined together to share their art with the public. President Mary Stewart believes the new gallery is raising awareness of the artists’ work and expanding their horizons. “Challenging our members with monthly themes has spurred creativity. We are excited to be in a location that gives us a more gallery-like space with great natural light and gives us the opportunity to offer classes and workshops.” A full schedule of demonstrations, gallery talks and classes is planned.
The gallery carries a full selection of members’ work, including original paintings and photography and prints, jewelry, stained and fused glass, wood turning and assemblages, clay and works in papier , fiber arts and mosaics. Since the artists are all local, many of the works feature or have been inspired by Cape May and the surrounding area. A selection of unique, one-of-a kind Christmas ornaments will be available year-round along with note cards and postcards of members’ work.
The gallery is open Friday and Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sunday and Monday from 10am to 4pm. Credit cards are accepted. Parking is available behind the store. For information, call 609-435-5253.
