Contact Improvvisation in the Nature with Aaron Brando & Shaina Catino (USA) 27-29 June 30-2 july

Whycompany via Colli San paolo 7, Campoleone-Aprilia (LT), Rome, Italy

WORKSHOP with Brando & Shaina 27-29
RESEARCH GROUP Brando, Shaina 30-2 July.

Designing our Attention

Through duet work, soloing and group improvisation, we will compose the space and the flavor of the world inside our dancing. How do we design our attention, together and in solo? In this workshop, we will explore suspension and fall in our dancing to support states of momentum and surprise. We will work towards refined awareness of structural alignment to provide us with tools for navigating our weight creatively and efficiently through our bones. These tools will help us to build comfort within disorientation as we play together in spherical space. Through specific parameters, we will co-create spontaneous compositions.

Dancing in Nature: The Embodied Landscape
Research Group 30-2 july

No previous experience necessary. Come if you want to playfully experience a beautiful place, a personal journey, and a group collaboration.

Imagination is rooted in what is real. For 3 days we will immerse ourselves in the vast possibilities that come with dwelling in the natural landscape. We will investigate how our bodies are vehicles for re-conceiving, through sensory perception, the dynamic relationship between our environment, bodies, and art. Practicing techniques from contemplative art practices such as authentic movement, stream-of-consciousness writing, and insight improvisation, we will take the time to hone our responsiveness to internal and external stimuli.
We will investigate how compositional elements, as explored in our improvisations, are also found in nature, and how our observations of nature inform our improvisations. We will balance our time between personal explorations, artistic collaborations, games, and the practice of body and landscape literacy (noticing how all these aspects support each other).

Brando (Aaron Brandes) teaches CI internationally. He serves on the Board of Directors for Earthdance and has worked with CI programing there since 2005. Brando has been instrumental in creating CI Ground Research, which encourages the ongoing research of contact improvisation by dancers from around the world. He trained with Tom Myers at the KMI Institute and is a certified Fascial Bodywork/Structural Integration practitioner. Brando’s pedagogical approach is combination of humor (inherent in this divinely awkward dance form), anatomical mapping, and his extensive background in meditation. The combination of technical specificity in CI with the deep and nuanced listening creates the foundation for exploration in accelerated states of movement. Shaina Cantino holds an MFA in Dance Performance and Choreography. Cantino teaches, directs and performs contemporary, dance theatre, improvisation and contact improvisation. Cantino's choreography has received numerous accolades including being chosen for national performance at the Kennedy Center for the American College Dance Festival in 2010. Cantino has collaborated and performed in choreography by Angie Hauser, Chris Aiken, Kathleen Hermesdorf, Paul Matteson, and Colleen Thomas. Cantino explores humor in quirky grace, the edge between ‘pedestrian’ delivery of text and more poetic, highly physical movement. She is also interested in how our bodies are vehicles for re-conceiving, through sensory perception, the dynamic relationship between our environments, communities, and art.
