Coming to the attention of many only recently through their song 'Far From Any Road' being used as the theme song for True Detective, The Handsome Family has been a songwriting collaboration that has spanned across the past two decades. The work of Brett and Rennie Sparks, Rennie crafts her poetry with the lyrics, while Brett weaves sad, beautiful harmonies within the music. Slowly and steadily building a cult following over 10 albums since 1993, they've earned support from everyone from Ringo Starr through to Bruce Springsteen.
Their unique and delicate skills have earned acclaim across the board. The BBC commented of their music that it is "a deliciously morbid pull on the imagination and the emotions", with the Chicago Tribune adding "At the core of every great Handsome Family song is a sense of mystery, of a world that defies our ability to understand or predict it. That in itself is a beautiful thing, and why I find the duo’s music so powerful, and so moving". Of their latest album, Wilderness, the New Yorker noted "The pieces are highly intelligent and succinct. Certain facts from natural history, certain observations and things she [Rennie Sparks] reveals, read like a stumbling discourse one might fall into with a stranger and remember for a long while", backed up by awards of 8/10 from Uncut, 4/5 from MOJO and 4/5 from Q.
