Images and an in-depth interview by Carmen Quijano, artistic director of ACDOS ACTIVIDAD CONTEMPORÁNEA in a perfect bound, hardcover book, published under the auspices of the Regional Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of the Government of Cantabria.
ACDOS ACTIVIDAD CONTEMPORÁNEA presents the book DREAMTIME, a bilingual monograph of Bubi Canal´s artwork. The publication takes us on a tour of the particular iconography of this Cantabrian artist, whose photographs, videos, sculptures and installations have a strong visual impact as a common thread.
Bubi Canal’s work, as described by curator Mónica Álvarez Careaga, is "a review of classical mythological scenes.” Through saturated color and evocative imaginary, characters and playgrounds of the 80s, "his photographs and videos convey an emblematic condition; we can decipher their meanings by analyzing the attributes of the work or by reading the texts that accompany them," Álvarez Careaga says in the introduction.
The book includes images of his most notable works and an interview with Bubi Canal by Carmen Quijano, artistic director of ACDOS ACTIVIDAD CONTEMPORÁNEA. In the interview, the artist takes us through his personal journey and the concepts that inspire and move his creativity. "My interest in art started when I was very young; my brother and I had a room that we called the playroom, a space to create that eventually became my first studio", Canal says.
This imaginative drive is supplemented in his work by pop icons. "I grew up watching MTV and many Japanese TV shows like Saint Seiya and Marco," explains the artist. "I admire the work of Jim Henson and Walt Disney, who created their own universes and continue making millions of people happy.” Color and imaginary worlds blend into their work, from an interest in love, fantasy, mystery and dreams.
Canal’s work combines the prefabricated with the handmade, the familiar with the dreamlike. He transports us to impossible worlds, with full color dreams, emotions and icons that evoke childhood. “I like to create a new reality to stay connected with my life,” Canal explains. "I like to open the door to the unknown and create something new"
