SANTA MONICA AUCTIONS is pleased to announce their 30 YEAR ANNIVERSARY AUCTION - an auction of modern and contemporary artwork of all mediums on Sunday June 8, 2014 beginning at 12PM at Bergamot Station Arts Center in Santa Monica, CA.
This is a benchmark auction celebrating the 30 year anniversary of SANTA MONICA AUCTIONS. Based in Santa Monica for 30 years, SANTA MONICA AUCTIONS is the longest running independently owned and operated boutique auction house in Los Angeles. SANTA MONICA AUCTIONS began their auctions in 1984 in a public space that came available in Santa Monica from the bar “The Pink” to an underground parking garage on Main Street. In 1994 they opened their flagship location at the Bergamot Station Arts Center in Santa Monica, which in 2013 was removed for the MTA Expo Train Stop. SANTA MONICA AUCTIONS then gained two new spaces at Bergamot Station Arts Center, Suite A5 and Suite B7, which is where their auctions are currently operated and held.
The 30 Year Anniversary Auction will present works by mid-career and established artists of all mediums including painting, photography, sculpture, multiples and prints.
Leading the sale is a dynamic 21 foot, 6 panel graffiti wall by Barry McGee commissioned by the Yerba Buena Museum of Art, San Francisco to enhance the construction barrier walls estimate $60,000/$80,000. Other unique works include a vibrant tempura on masonite painting by Marc Chagall titled Le Nu A L’ane Bleau from 1978 estimate $375,000/$450,000; an oil on canvas by Carlos Almaraz from hisHorizontal Lake Series estimate 65,000/$75,000 and a unique David Hockney watercolor on paper from 1979 estimate $25,000/$35,000.
Multiples of sculpture and prints will also be featured in the sale including a DeWain Valentine cast polyester Disc estimated at $14,000/$18,000. Highlight prints include a large multiple by David Hockney titled Celia with a Green Hat from 1984 estimate: $25,000/$35,000; Chloe is Carried Off by the Methymneans from 1961 estimate $25,000/$35,000 and finally a lithograph from 1977 by Jasper Johns estimate: $25,000/$30,000.
Unique to other auction houses, SANTA MONICA AUCTIONS accepts unique and rare works up until a week prior to the auction.
