Internationally considered among the greatest Italian pianists.
When he was a boy, he committed himself to piano and Chemistry studies at the same time and gained his conservatoire diploma. While doing that, he also took interest in contemporary poetry, co-operated with literary reviews and published two anthologies. He won several poetry contests and took part in many readings.
In 1984 he took up his activity as a jazz musician with his own trio. He got noticed by musicians and critics and in 1989 he was summoned in Tiziana Ghiglioni’s group, with whom he collaborated until 1996. He tackled any jazz style (until free jazz), both as a leader and as a guest in important instrumental ensembles.
He undertook several projects of syncretism between improvisation music and other arts, such as poetry, video art and performances, co-operating with some among the greatest Italian poets, like Luigi Pasotelli, Milo de Angelis, Giovanni Fontana and Tomaso Kemeny.
He performed side by side with leaders of artistic movements, such as Steve Lacy, Lee Konitz, Anthony Braxton, Lester Bowie, Enrico Rava, Tim Berne, Paul Lovens, Paul Rutherford, Han Bennink, Willem Breuker, Marc Ducret, Michael Moore etc., with many of whom he also realized record publications.
In duo with Lee Konitz he realized the CD “Breath and Whispers (Homage to A. Skrjabin)” (Philology Rec., 2004).
In 1997 he joined the eminent Italian ensemble Italian Instabile Orchestra, with whom he carried out worldwide tours. In 2000 he performed in a piano duet with Cecil Taylor and he has been the only pianist, apart from the author, who ever carried out original compositions by Taylor at a concert. He is considered among the greatest performers of Thelonious Monk’s music.
Since 2001 he has been collaborating with Cineteca Italiana di Milano (Milan’s Italian Film Library) in setting important restored silent movies to music. In these projects he has been making use of original music, employing current sonorities and techniques which enable the pianist to transform this operation into a “concert with images”.
He has been invited to the main international festivals in Europe, U.S.A., Canada and Japan.
In 2004 he built an important concert/performance with piano, electronic recordings and videos, Beuys Voice, on the last invaluable video of the German artist Joseph Beuys, with Lucrezia De Domizio, historian and disciple of the beuysian thought. The performance has already been put on stage about 15 times in European Festivals and Museums (at the 52a Biennale d’Arte Contemporanea di Venezia - 52nd Venice’s Biennial of Contemporary Art, at the Greek amphitheatre in Sparta, in Spain, at Girona’s auditorium, at Zurich’s Kunsthaus, at Pisa’s Theatre, at Naples’, Grosseto’s etc.).
In 2011 Beuys Voice became also a book and an album, published by Mondadori Electa.
Since 1999 he has started an artistic fellowship with Stefano Benni, one of the most famous Italian writers. With Benni he has being carrying out many recitals, among which Misterioso (“Mysterious”, a tribute to Thelonious Monk) stands out. It has been hugely successful, both in Italy and abroad (more than 70 reruns in Italy, France, Germany, Czech Republic, Great Britain) and it has been published in form of dvd by Feltrinelli (2005).
Since 2000 he has formed a duo and a trio with Gianluigi Trovesi, with whom he has published an album for the eminent record label ECM (Vaghissimo ritratto, “Vaguest portrait” - 2007), awarded by German critique (Bestenlisten) and by the review Classic Voice, which decreed it as the best album of the year for the “Jazz” section. In 2006 he set up a duo with the French trumpet player Jean-Luc Cappozzo, with whom he realized an album for the record label Soul Note (2007).
He has also carried out many tours in Switzerland, Germany and Spain and in 2009 he played with Trovesi in the Berliner Philharmoniker Auditorium, at Berlin’s Festival. He met Anthony Braxton on the occasion of a concert with the Italian Instabile Orchestra. The American musician has shown to have great esteem for him and has invited him into a group project to be carried out together.
In 2010 he played in a duo with the American guitarist Garrison Fewell. He has fulfilled a new demanding project with Stefano Benni, creating and performing the music for "The Waste Land" by T.S. Eliot, published in an album and talking book (with Benni as a narrator) and then put on stage.
In 2011 he published in solo “A dawn will come” (★★★★ for magazines “Jazz Magazine” – France, “Free Jazz” – Belgium, "JazzNMore" - Switzerland, "Alias" - Italy and "All About Jazz" ) for the English label Leo Records and built a new project with live electronics.
This album was among the Best New Jazz Albums of 2011 for CultureCatch Survey (U.S.A.).
At Iseo Jazz Festival 2011 (Special Project) he performed a full program of compositions by Cecil Taylor.
In 2012 he played at Ictus festival in New York (The Stone) in trio with Guido Mazzon and Barry Altschul, and with the New Mitteleuropa Ensemble by Andrea Centazzo.
At Clusone Jazz Festival 2012 he played in duo with Pheeroan AkLaff.
In 2013 he founded the Italian Art Trio with Paolino Dalla Porta (bass) and Stefano Bagnoli (drums).
On the occasion of festival "Sound of the Dolomites" he performed a concert –reading: “The many hearts of Edgar Allan Poe”, together with Stefano Benni (narrator) and Mario Brunello (cello).
An original encounter between two musicians belonging only apparently to two different worlds: jazz and classical music, and a writer. Petrin and Brunello attempted to explore the considerable influence and inspiration that these works have exerted on music through conversation between themselves and the voice of Stefano Benni.
In February 2014 he performed in “Beuys Voice” a concert ‐ performance held in Pescara.
The project “Remember Joseph Beuys” has been curated by Lucrezia De Domizio.
In duo with Gianluigi Trovesi (sax and clarinet) he has performed in “Vaghissimo ritratto”.
In February he published in solo "Traces and Ghosts" (Featuring: u ‐ inductio ‐ noise) for the English label Leo Records.
The CD has been awarded with the prestigious disk "Choc" year 2014, by the French magazine "Jazz Magazine/Jazzman".
In March, Petrin is back on stage with Mario Brunello (cello) and Stefano Benni (narrator) on the occasion of Piacenza Jazz Festival, with the concert ‐ reading “The many hearts of Edgar Allan Poe”.
Up to now he has cut over 70 records, many of which have been awarded by the critique.
He contributes to Contemporary Art reviews, carries out teaching activity in Pavia and at Piacenza’s Conservatoire. He holds improvement seminars for Jazz Music and workshops on Theatre and Music with Stefano Benni.
His activity is aimed at the elaboration of Thought and at the encounter among Art’s languages.
He firmly believes that Art can help Man to evolve.
