Last year I ran my 4th Marathon and after I completed it I thought what can I do next and I’ve always wanted to do something that I could look back on later in life and feel proud of.
My brother that still lives in the UK has a degenerative condition and has been losing his sight for the past 15 years and is now registered blind. He is awaiting a guide dog and that is often the subject when I speak with him over the phone.
That’s when I got the idea of raising money for a charity that supports the blind. To help someone who is in the same position as my brother.
I contacted the Association for the Blind of WA to make enquiries about Guide Dogs and what it costs to train a Guide Dog I was shocked to discover it costs approximately $30,000!
I decided that I didn’t want to raise just an amount of money to contribute toward the training of a Guide Dog. I wanted to raise the FULL amount, but I knew that running a marathon was not going to raise $30,000. I knew that I would have to raise the stakes... That is why I’ve decided to run the City to Surf marathon 2014 blindfolded.
I have done some research and as far as I can see, this has not been done in Australia before.
Not only is this going to be a monumental challenge for me, but it is going to put myself in the position of being blind like my brother who faces his own daily challenges of living with vision loss.
