What is the focus of this conference?

Human spaceflight has so far been, at most, a succession of forays - That is: astronauts leave the Earth's surface, travel to some destination, stay for a very limited time and then return to Earth as quickly as possible. This "foray mentality" has not brought us very far. No human has yet traveled in interplanetary space. The long-term challenges of prolonged zero gravity, and long-term radiation exposure in the interplanetary environment are still not completely understood. Moreover the foray approach imposes crippling costs on space transport since every vehicle must both deliver people to a destination and return them as quickly as possible.

Progress toward a space-faring society, requires a habitation paradigm. One travels to a destination with the intent to stay for an indefinite period. (This does not imply that the means for return are not provided, just that the stay can be prolonged.) One's efforts are directed toward the permanent human habitation of worlds or stations outside the Earth. In the space faring and inhabiting society, people will work and learn and raise children, and their children will, in turn, learn and work and raise children of their own so that someday, their descendents will travel to the stars.

NASA in the 1970s arrived at a series of conceptual designs and awe-inspiring concept art of what future space colonies may look like. Self-sufficient space colonies housing 10,000 or more people were investigated and seriously pondered on. Unfortunately, a variety of factors have led to a stagnation in space habitation development. Four decades later, we are still dreaming about it on Earth.

This habitation paradigm raises compelling issues for the future direction of human space exploration. The aim of the 2nd SPACE Conference is to stimulate fresh thinking on how the new habitation paradigm can be developed from the combined progression in areas of space humanities, space science, and space technology. We want to advance the future of exploration and we want to hear your input.

Who are the organizers?

The Scientific Preparatory Academy for Cosmic Explorers (SPACE) is a space education institution founded in January 2012 on the Isle of Man that inextricably combines a rigorous educational program with actual, hands-on space system development and exploration expeditions. The fundamental thesis is that exploration is education, and that scholarly instruction and research are merely two aspects of discovery. The ultimate goal of the SPACE is to help build a space-faring society.

The present space education is one marked by specialized high school programs or postgraduate institutions such as the International Space University (ISU). There currently exists no multidisciplinary space educational university for the undergraduate. There are aerospace engineering programs around the world but many of them are not related to space or are heavily specialized in one area. To have a multidisciplinary space education which includes topics such as astronomy, astrophysics, computer science, astrophysics, space law, space commerce, Russian, Chinese, etc. in a 4-year educational curriculum is a gap that will be fulfilled by the establishment of the SPACE.

SPACE is a nonprofit academic and research corporation created by young people from many countries, relying on grass-roots support as well as on aid from existing organizations. It will offer both an education and, to those so inclined, a life-long career. SPACE will offer a rigorous program of studies and research that emphasizes the skills and knowledge needed by those who will explore the cosmos.
