Course description:

Sama Vinyasa, Breath Roots Core!

Mornings will be guided practice, followed by a short break, ‘afternoons’ will be time to look in more detail at what the morning practice shows us we need to work on!

We Start at the Beginning, Samasthitihi.

As is typical in Indian thought and teachings the Ultimate Goal, or Direction of our focus is stated at the very beginning. The rest of the teachings are intended to make that pathway accessible. Same in Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga!

Sama is the Intention, a finer state of balance, a realization of the oneness of all things, peace, non-violence and harmony. These kinds of words describe our intended direction and all of our practices must be leading us towards this Sama state.

The Method we use is called Vinyasa.

A gradual, ‘step-by-step’ approach. Gradual is determined by each us individually and in real time, an ever changing, constantly dynamic approach to practice. It is never finished, and it is never the same. It cannot be! We use this dynamic to increase our presence, increase our awareness, to understand consciousness better and better!

Then, following the Classic Ashtanga Yoga sequences we use what is called “trishtana” or three pillars or principals of practice.

I have given them shorthand labels: Breath Roots Core.

Guru-ji used the words Pranayama, Asana, and Drishti. Pranayama is a practice utilizing breath awareness, our most important focus. Asana needs to be practiced not with some illusion of an finality, an end point or an ‘accomplishment, but rather in a way that increases Presence, increases Consciousness, with a focus on getting to the Root Cause!

And all yoga practices must take us ever deeper and deeper into ourselves, into our true nature. That is the purpose of dristhi, the gazing place, to turn our focus inwards. I called this Core; Heart, Soul, Spirit.

So, this is what we want to do! We will begin at the Beginning. Look deeper into Samasthitihi and how it is the Master Pattern, knowing which all other asana are known. There are a finite set of alignment principals, a small set of actions we need to cultivate in Samasthitihi which once we understand them we have a kind of Blue-Print for all the other poses.

If we are heading towards Sama, following the prescribed Vinyasa, and focused on our Breath, on working into and from the Roots, and directing our focus into the Core We are doing Ashtanga Yoga!

Day by day we will unfold deeper and deeper into the Vinyasa, the set sequence.

Come! Find the willingness to Begin! To see how knowing very well a smaller set of things we set the stage for the unfoldment of the Whole!
