✖✖ ALICE GLASS (Crystal Castles)
Alice Glass was born in 1988. She formed Crystal Castles in 2003 with Ethan Kath and released their debut single on Myspace.com in 2005.
Fusing low-res electronic noise and pop hooks so effortlessly that it can seem accidental, Crystal Castles began as producer/multi-instrumentalist Ethan Kath's solo project in late 2003. Kath got the moniker from the name of She-Ra's dwelling in the He-Man and Masters of the Universe cartoon series; it's also the name of a 1983 Atari video game, which is oddly appropriate, considering that one component of the band's distinctive sound comes from a keyboard modified with an Atari 5200 sound chip.
When Kath collaborated with singer Alice Glass on some songs in spring 2005, Crystal Castles' lineup was complete. One of the songs the pair recorded, "Alice Practice," was something of an accident: it was intended to be a demo of Glass testing out a microphone, but its presence on MySpace piqued record labels' interest. "Alice Practice" was released as a limited-edition 7" in summer 2006 on Merok Records, also home to Klaxons; its 500-copy run sold out in three days.
They have also given birth to several controversies. Alice's stage behavior brought down the curtains at Glastonbury festival in June, 2008.
✖✖WE ARE ISIS
I am more than a party, more than an event. I am a goddess, the go-to protective force for the black sheep of the city—the trendsetters too fierce for the Castro and too hip for the Mission. I am an expert curator of deep disco and holy house, a purveyor of an experience so deep and enlightening that it becomes more than your Saturday night, it becomes your life. I am more than a woman, I am a goddess. I am your mother, your lover, your champion. Saint or sinner, monarch or minion, I am your most fervent friend and your closest confidant. Protector of the polysexual, bastion of black sheep, defender of the downtrodden, I am yours. Follow my guiding light to the house that house music built. You will find that I am the bass throbbing between your legs on the dance-floor, the nipple hardening melody of your favorite disco song. Take a peek through my all seeing eye and see yourself whole. You will find that you begin where the dance-floor never ends. Open your mind to the enlightenment afforded by a clusterfuck of inclusivity. You will find the comfort of my ample bosom in the hearts of your brothers’ and sisters’ writhing souls. Share with each other the magic of music and drink together from my bottomless cup of mystery. I will dwell in the droplets of sweat that fly off of your pulsating bodies. I will live in the power of your collective touch and luxuriate in your most primal urges. Gather at my throne and then tear it down to build a discotheque in my likeness.
