*** MIKE DUNN ***
Chicago house music legend Mike Dunn, has been DJing and producing music for over twenty years. Hailing from Englewood, Chicago, Mike started out DJing at the local block parties that took place playing disco, funk, soul and prototype Chicago house tracks.
“I was one of the first cats bringing two reel-to-reels and spinning with them at the parties. I was bringing out two Pioneer 707s, doing the Hummingbird, Jacks, The Courtyard, etc. I’d bring a drum machine, too. I would make tracks right then as the party was going. Way before my guys Daft Punk and all of them were doing live gigs, I was doing that at the basement parties – just bringing drum machines and doing everything live. A lot of my early tracks came from me doing them at the party when the party was going on. I’d save it in memory and bring it home and polish it up. But I listen to it now and it’s like, damn… didn’t use enough cleaner!”
Word soon spread about his talents and Mike was booked for various clubs in and around Chicago, DJ’ing with house music innovators such as Ron Hardy, Larry Heard and good friend Armando Gallop. It wasn’t long before Mike got the production bug, resulting in his first release in 1987, “Dance You Mutha” on Westbrook Records, he also started to produce and engineer for other Chicago artists, such as Armando, Fast Eddie and K-Alexi Shelby.
More house and techno productions followed in the late 80s with Mike’s distinctive vocal delivery and trademark hip-house, acid, production style, to create tracks such as ’Let It Be House’, ‘Magic Feet’ and “Face the Nation”, some times under the name Mike Dunn but also under aliases such as MD Connection, MDIII and QX-1.
He continued to produce and release throughout the 1990s, with releases on labels such as Nervous, Nitestuff and Tribal America, whilst also working with other producers and vocalists such as Syleena Johnson, Byron Stingley, Mina Jackson, Kool Rock Steady and Kym English to name a few.
More recently tracks like Phreaky MF’ on French label Robsoul and ’God Made Me Phunky’, re-released on Defected records, have raised his profile and delivered his music to new audiences. Whilst new interest in Mike’s original old school jamz have taken him to work with the new generation of house and techno producers and labels, demonstrated on tracks such as ‘It’s the Music’ produced by Murphy Jaxx and more recently ‘Touch the Sky’ produced by Alden Tyrell and released on Clone’s Jack for Daze imprint.
2013 has so far seen various single and remix releases and a return to his house music roots with some old skool acid releases. Mike launches his new label Blackball Muzik this year, as an outlet for his own productions and other releases from the BlackBall Muzik familly.
*** FORTUNE - APART ***
Made in England, Jessica Fenner aka Fortune, was raised in a family that loved to throw big parties with live music, lots of dancing, wine and 200 or so happy people - the foundation of a passion for musical events. Childhood years in the Bristol area were influenced by local artists, Massive Attack, Roni Size, and later Morcheeba and Portishead. Classically trained in flute, piano and saxophone, rave culture erupted in the 80s and 90s hooking the young music fan. Carl Cox, The Prodigy, The Shamen and KLF had a big impact and by 16, she was involved with a local promotions outfit Transition, and even suspended from school for taking 2 younger girls clubbing!
1993, barely 19, Fortune headed to California with $140 and a suitcase. No sign of England's popular dance music culture, Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" bumped out of cars and clubs everywhere, East battled West, and she pursued her hip-hop education. Returning to England a year later, a new genre was sweeping the nation - jungle. Her life revolved around weekends absorbing the artists blowing up the clubs: Grooverider, Sasha, LTJ Bukem.
Six months later, back to America, this time Milwaukee. A fixture in the cities emerging club scene, she began djing in '99, quickly landing residencies at 2 underground hip-hop establishments. Her style developed to include house, techno and broken beats, and she played every venue Milwaukee had to offer. Since then she's performed at noted venues across the States, including San Francisco's infamous EndUp and 222 Hyde; Minneapolis's First Ave; most Chicago locales including The Mid, Visions and is a regular at the legendary Smart Bar.
She's had the privilege of being booked as direct support for numerous world class artists, including Audiojack, Colette, Catz & Dogz, Derrick Carter, Derrick May, Gaiser, JT Donaldson, Johnny Fiasco, Justin Martin, Justin Long, Kaskade, Kid Sister, KiNK, Kool Keith, Pezzner, and Green Velvet.
In 2009 feeling a need in the community, Fortune quit her 6 year residency at Milwaukee's home for dance music, Three, and shifted focus to her promotions company (started as For U Events in 2005, rebranded as Apart in 2011), producing multiple weekly parties non-stop, and one off larger scale events. Apart's mission: to maintain and grow underground house, techno and drum and bass community in Milwaukee, by shining light on local talent and delivering a steady influx of world class artists and their sounds.
Fortune’s mission: to facilitate happiness through music. "Since those childhood family parties music and dance has moved me - a gateway to community, growth and joy. Making that available for others, moments to smile, dance or close ones eyes and discover something... that's what fulfills me."
Achievements: Triple Threat DJ Battle 1st Place 2003; featured Info DJ ‘04; Scion Emerging Artist nominee ‘05; founded For U Events ‘05; coordinated six date Milwaukee leg of National Scion/Imeem BEAT Tour 06; launched A.part in 2011 www.apart-music.com; tour coordinator for Dirtybird Record Label Hatched Tour 2012
*** MARKIS ***
Fresh raised and handpicked from the House groves of Orlando, Florida, USA. Markis began his DJ start among the times top clubs and DJs. Always interested and influenced by music he took to learning and playing the piano, guitar and flute fluently at an early age.
Markis found his way through the operation and scene of local Orlando clubs as a young sound and lighting engineer. Constantly surrounded and consumed by hard driving House, Markis couldn’t resist hitting the decks himself in 1998. Theatre. This giving him the opportunity to play alongside well known DJs such as, Dave Cannalte, Kimball Collins, Cliff T, Hybrid, Donald Glaude, Taylor, Gabriel & Dresden, Timo Maas, DJ Three, DJ Dan and more.
His success paved his way to Miami’s Bangin’ South Beach, where he played many top clubs and still receives a yearly invite to annual parties at Miami’s Winter Music Conference.
While bringing his unique progressive/electro house & breaks blend to clubs across the US (GA,NV, AZ, SC, MA, DC), in 2007 Markis followed a short side-stop in Denver, CO that lead him to his first International gig at Mexico City's well known after hours club, the Doberman. This opened the door of invitation to play a weekly residency poolside at Maxim Magazine’s Beach Club @ME Hotel in Cancun, Mexico.
Markis is now back in the US after a nearly 4 year stay in Lima, Peru. He is the first North American DJ to hold a weekly residency in South America - at Bartini Lounge in Lima, Peru, for two years. Blowing up dance floors across Lima's many clubs (Gotica, Aura, Casa Vieja, Xcess, Cabash, Insomnia, Macarena, just to name a few), Markis also played a variety of private & beach events through his years spent in Peru.
