The Marishka Phillips Theatrical Preparatory will host Master Instructor Lisa Ann Goldsmith for our Shakespeare Summer Sizzle One Day Intensive.
Shakespeare is the ultimate workout for all actors - whatever you want to do better as an actor, working on this text will help. If you want higher stakes in contemporary plays, better audition skills, and a deeper in-performance connection to your own truth and simplicity, this class will help. Shakespearean language demands everything you've got, and will help you to recognize your own habits and boundaries, plus inspire you to reach further.
This workshop is recommended for highly enthusiastic actors who want to expand their knowledge of Shakespeare’s plays, and broaden their awareness and proficiency of text, rhetoric, and the Elizabethan world as it is applied to the physical, vocal, and emotional realization of Shakespeare’s characters.
In the first half of the day, participants will deepen their understanding of Shakespeare by developing vocal & physical acting skills that complement prior acting training with table studies of First Folio technique, including verse vs. prose, punctuation, lexicon exploration, imagery, and scansion (including iambic pentameter) - all tools necessary to understand Shakespeare and to bring his heightened language to life. The actors will reconnect with Shakespeare's text, revisiting their monologues, and exploring how the structure of the verse might influence character and performance.
In the second half of the day, the instructor will challenge students to approach Shakespeare fearlessly and make brave artistic choices, and will highlight the actor’s ability to create believable, entertaining characters by relying on the text and the self, and will be directed in his or her chosen Shakespeare monologue.
Whether you are looking to brush up your Shakespeare or to tackle him for the first time, this workshop requires your commitment, curiosity, stamina, and courage. In return, the Elizabethan world and Shakespeare’s explosive language, fascinating images, passion, and humanity will open your heart and kindle (or re-kindle) the greatest love of your life!
