WHY SUGARBEAT?

Industrial development in Tuam dates back to the early 1930's when a sugar factory was built here, one of four in the country.

This sugar factory was the mainstay of the Town and the surrounding countryside up to the 1980's as it provided employment for people in the town and also for people in the farming community.

This factory went into decline in the 1960's and other smaller industries began to be developed.

With the closure of the sugar factory in January 1987, unemployment in the Tuam area was at its highest level with a total of 28.8% of the population being out of work at one point.
(Tuam-Guide.com)

It was a big blow at the time for the town but Tuam has since recovered and now it's time to celebrate! Remember our past and look to the bright new future.

MUSIC IN TUAM

Tuam is long known to have a vibrant music scene. While The Saw Doctors are perhaps the town's most famous band, many more bands and performers from the town have gained popularity both nationally and internationally.

In 2014 Sugarbeat aim to showcase the best of both national and local musical talent.

Here's a few lines from the Saw Doctors Song about our Sugartown!

This used to be a sugar town
The beet was drawn from all around
They came and put their money down
This used to be a sugar town

This used to be a thriving place
Full time work, semi-state
Trucks and tractors coming late
Wagons at the railway gates

But the kids have dreams.......
