Basic Soul Unit - 3 HOUR SET (Lab.our / Nonplus+)

Paul Purgas (Emptyset / Raster-Noton / Body Hammer)

Benjamin Freeney (Foom Music)

Versial & Tom Breslin (Nonline)

After two shows with the Sex Tags UFO guys DJ Fett Burger & L.A. Morillo last month, we return to the same stretch of the road for our next show in Bar A Bar. With a 6am licence and a heavy lineup, we’re expecting this party to go off so get on those advance tickets quicksmart.

Basic Soul Unit

Coming over from Toronto for his debut London DJ set, we have a man who has released on a veritable who’s who of great labels around the world - Osgut Ton, Still Music, Mathematics, Crème Organization, Versatile, Philpot, Nonplus+, Dolly, Mule Electronic and his newest, and own label, Lab.our which he runs with Jason Ulrich.

Hong Kong born and raised in Canada, Stuart Li aka Basic Soul Unit has been steadily making his mark in underground electronic music circles since his first release in 2003. Stuart grew up listening to Toronto’s college radio stations and attended after hours parties playing underground house music. He later worked at Cosmos Records store which dealt vintage Jazz, Soul, Funk, Latin, Brazilian, Disco, House & Hip Hop to crate diggers both local and from abroad. Reflecting his diverse interest in music, Stuart's house & techno productions can swing from lush and soulful to crunchy and jacking . The end of 2012 saw the the release of Basic Soul Unit’s first album “Motional Response” on Chicago’s Still Music to great critical acclaim.

As with his productions, Stuart's strength as a DJ is his versatility & range - he can expertly intertwine melodic techno, heavy jacking and industrial sounds, deep house & disco which this extended three hour set will allow him to explore.

Paul Purgas

Paul is one half of experimental techno duo Emptyset and runs the label & event series ‘We Can Elude Control’ which has seen releases from Karl O’Connor & Peder Mannerfelt along with events featuring the likes of Chris & Cosey. Whilst Paul is heavily involved in the experimental music & art scene, his lineage as founder of the Body Hammer party along with fellow Bristolian Joe Hart means he knows how to work a dancefloor. Playing a rare 2014 DJ set, experience for yourself what sent Little White Earbuds and others into raptures when he DJed at Mutek last year.

Benjamin Freeney

Our first guest on the night is Benjamin Freeney, head-honcho of the recently launched Foom Music imprint. With a roster of releases that includes an EP & album from Bruno Pronsato’s ‘Archangel’ alias, a special Record Store release of a rare Peter Zummo & Arthur Russell collaboration and coming later in the year, a release from legendary New York musician Peter Gordon, Foom is a label that qualifies as ‘buy-on-sight’. With Benjamin holding down a residency at the infamous Dublin afterhours party ‘The Breakfast Club’ for the last couple of years, he is equally as deft at selecting for the dancefloor so was a perfect choice for the night.

Versial & Tom Breslin

Same as it ever was, Versial & Tom Breslin will open proceedings. Stay tuned for their first recorded collaborative mix which is soon to feature on a certain idiosyncratic & well-loved european website….
