Yoga Works History
The founders of YogaWorks, Maty Ezraty, Chuck Miller and Alan Finger believed in Yoga’s power to change lives. They came together from different parts of the world, from different Yoga disciplines, and from different life experiences to share a passion for, and commitment to, bringing Yoga to more people. They did not aspire to be businessmen or trendsetters; they were first and foremost students, teachers, and practitioners. They got on their mats to practice everyday – it’s how they lived and grew.
When they founded their school, they saw an opportunity, indeed an obligation, to bring together many styles of Yoga under one generous, open, flowing umbrella - YogaWorks. They sought to uphold the 5,000-year-old tradition of Yoga by infusing their programs with integrity, quality, authenticity, and accessibility to all who came through their doors. Their hearts and minds were always open. And their vision inspired thousands.
Maty, with the help and inspiration of senior teachers Chuck Miller and Lisa Walford, honored the tradition of the great Yoga masters who passed knowledge from teacher to student, and created the highly renowned YogaWorks Teacher Training Program. This Program has formed and guided leading Yogis across the world. Working side by side, these three visionaries pioneered a unique approach to teaching asana, inspired by the classical Ashtanga, Iyengar and Viniyoga schools, yet distinctly attuned to the needs and challenges of their students’ bodies. Their work has since been complemented by Alan Finger‘s deep knowledge of meditation and the subtle body, making the curriculum the incredibly rich, diverse, and comprehensive program it is today.
Together the YogaWorks Studios and the YogaWorks Teacher Training Program represent the vast knowledge and expertise of each of these founders, as well as that of the many other teachers who have contributed their ideas, creativity, talent, and passion through the years. Today we honor Maty, Chuck, Alan, and Lisa as leaders of a modern Yoga resurgence that continues to bring this most mindful, most life-affirming practice to people of every shape and size, from every walk of life, and across the ages.
And so to them we say NAMASTE.
The YogaWorks Style
Bringing a Timeless Practice to Modern Times
The ancient and timeless tradition of Yoga has been passed from teacher to student for over 5,000 years. We continue that tradition by welcoming into our studios teachers and students from all schools of Yoga, and from all walks of life, with open arms and an offer of community. At the core of YogaWorks is a passionate, committed group of teachers and staff who understand, first hand, the joy and power of Yoga. To serve their students, they bring their collective wisdom and dedication, their years of practice and training, their openness, their caring, and their creativity into the classroom every day. And, they have fun doing it.
Yoga is many things to many people. It is fitness, it is health, it is relaxation, it is transformation, it is the opening of new possibilities, it is community. That is why YogaWorks has created an eclectic and open school embracing all types of Yoga. We are continuously improving and expanding our offerings to serve the needs of our diverse student population and to accommodate the creativity of our superb teachers. We take particular pride in our programs for beginning Yoga students, children, athletes, seniors and people in need of rehabilitation, all of which feature our trademark YogaWorks approach: safe, compassionate and skillful teaching.
At the foundation of our teaching philosophy is the idea that the concepts of Yoga must be understood first through the body. Our distinctive approach to teaching and sequencing yoga classes, takes its inspiration from the synthesis of classical Ashtanga, Iyengar, and Viniyoga and has evolved to become a solid foundation for teachers and students of all types of Yoga. YogaWorks sequencing focuses on the best way to safely open and engage the bodies of our students. Our goal is always to guide students to greater self-awareness, focus, and expansiveness. At YogaWorks students will learn, grow, and find exceptional quality, accessibility, and authenticity in everything we do. That's why YogaWorks!
YogaWorks Teacher Training
YogaWorks offers a cohesive, multi-specialist approach to teacher training that blends the best of the Yoga tradition from the East and West. Our faculty is comprised of highly-trained, experienced, inspiring professionals with a profound understanding of Yoga’s transformative power.
At the cornerstone of our teaching philosophy is the idea that the concepts of Yoga must be first understood through the body and the dynamic, conscious practice of asana. the YogaWorks method is a blending of the three strands of the Krishnamacharya lineage-Ashtanga, Iyengar and the teachings of Desikachar coupled with the unique approach to sequencing that is specifically designed to meet the needs of the average yoga student. From Ashtanga the method incorporates heat and flow, from Iyengar precise detailed instructions and from the teachings of Desikachar, posture modifications-the idea that the practice should fit the practitioner. Our programs emphasize a student’s personal practice as the source for their creative teaching, and include a comprehensive study of the techniques and mechanics of fundamental yoga postures, as well as the tools necessary to teach and inspire others. To deepen their education students will also study functional anatomy and physiology, explore Yoga’s philosophical underpinnings, practice meditation and pranayama, and investigate the ancient science of Ayurveda.
As an international school, YogaWorks is excited to bring its program to Santorini island, Greece in collaboration with Anna Zorzou (YogaWorks Teacher Trainer and Administrator).
