Course description:
During the 4-day workshop, participants learn to make molds using different materials that we will take to the Berlin Glas e.V. hot-shop and blow glass into . This special method of working with glass has a 2000-year-old history that is very much in popular use today!

What does it mean to blow into a mold?
This means shaping the glass by using molds of different materials in a way that is not necessarily possible to make with glass blowing. During the 2 days we spend in the Berlin Glas e.V. hot-shop, the gaffer will prepare the molten glass and blow it into the different molds. Participants will learn to assist the gaffer and have an interactive experience of the process.

For example: It is possible to make a negative cast of an object and to blow glass into it. We will use plaster mainly but we will also introduce participants to use other materials, such as metal, found objects or forms made out of mesh wire. The metal integrates with the glass and interesting effects can be achieved. The moulds will be built at the sculpture workshop of the BBK in the first 2 days.

Experimentation is the key! This workshop is geared for an experience of learning a new and exciting technique; so do not be discouraged if your piece is not successful. Come to the workshop with lots of ideas and don´t be afraid to try!

Course length:
4 days // 2 days at the BBK + 2 Days at Berlin Glas e.V.
Each session goes from10:00-17:00 with 1hr. lunch break
(We suggest you bring a bag lunch with you. Water will be provided at the hot-shop.)

Maximum enrolment: 6 people

One last note! Please bring a model or object that can be easily cast with plaster (2 or 3-part mould) or other objects made of metal you want to blow into directly. The size of the object you want to make should not be bigger than 30 x 30 cm. It is possible to make a model out of clay at the workshop as well (there’s modelling clay available).

Each student might be able to do two or three objects / molds.

Please wear comfortable shoes and clothes that you wont mind if it becomes covered in plaster!
