Feast of Muzzzuni

Alcara Li Fusi Messina, Italy

To trace the origins of the celebration of the feast of "Muzzuni", which takes place every year in Alcara li Fusi June 24, on the occasion of the summer solstice, it is necessary to go back in time, to the period when some Greeks escaped the destruction Trojan found refuge where there is currently the country. Even today echoes the soul of this nation and the Muzzuni is tangible proof of this, revealing himself as the continuation of the celebration of the mysteries of the Greek propitiatory dedicated to the gods Adonis, Aphrodite and Demeter, goddess of the earth, vegetation, fertility and ' love.

The rituals related to the experience of death and rebirth of nature, the ability of living beings to fertilize and procreate became agricultural festivals of atonement and purifying value, reaching up to the present day with all their charm and their deep meanings.

On the evening of 24 June exudes a charming atmosphere through the narrow streets of Alcara. In the most characteristic corners are set up real altars, whose main protagonist is just the Muzzuni. Every little detail conceals an intrinsic meaning, starting pitcher: in fact Sicilian idiom "Muzzuni" means just necked jug hub. The peasants of the ancient tradition they used to bury the jug in the fields sown, so that the Mother Earth favored a bountiful harvest. The seed sprouted in earthenware jug represents the fields sown in autumn and in winter that come to light sprouting in the spring. The ears of wheat represent the renewal of soil fertility in the course of the seasons, while the sprigs of rosemary seem to be a reference to the river Rosemary, and then to the regenerating power of the water.

The festival takes place just after dusk, in the old neighborhoods where the women decorate with gold and ears, a pitcher from the severed head, placed above an altar placed between the "pizzare" colored carpets woven to the frame. Around the altar is celebrated with dances and songs of love until the wee hours of the morning.

The streets come alive with a bustle of people, polyphonic songs that celebrate love and work in the fields, the bright colors of pizzare woven by women alcaresi. All this creates harmony among men, dissolve the enmities and intertwines comparatico. The popular tradition, in fact, want that on this day you are gripping the so-called "cumparanzi", promises of fraternal friendship between two people
