Last year, we ran a huge event at Egg in London to raise money for leukemia charities. It was inspired by the plight of our friend Sonia Akow, who had been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML). We raised £14,310 towards helping two charities (see below), with some of the funds also going direct to Sonia herself to help her during a period in which she was unable to work.
Sadly since the event Sonia passed away. We are doing a second benefit event on Saturday, June 14 in her memory. All proceeds from ticket sales, bar a tiny portion for artist expenses (full accounts will be published) will go to charity.
Once again this year we are aiming to help the Anthony Nolan Trust, which helps save the lives of people with blood cancer, and the African Caribbean Leukemia Trust, which promotes bone marrow and blood donation within ethnic minority communities. We will also be donating money to the hospital ward (Dacie Ward at Hammersmith Hospital) where Sonia was so well looked after during her illness.
This year we'll be doing a daytime event at Brixton Jamm,
prompted largely by the fact that there's no TCR BBQ this year - and we all remember Sonia as a familiar face from those legendary breakbeat all-dayers.
Saturday June 14 is the day of the first England World Cup game - so we'll be running our event until 10pm to allow plenty of time for people to find their way to a local pub for 11pm kickoff. We'll be publishing a list of pubs in Brixton which are showing the game on this page.
There will be a barbecue on site serving up fabulous jerk chicken and rice and peas!
