Burn Down The Disco Presents: HEY BULLDOG & BRUJA - Opium- No.10, Barnsley

Opium-No 10 10 peel parade, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, UK

Burn Down The Disco & Opium No.10 Present:

Hey Bulldog

Burn Down The Disco first came across Hey Bulldog in a disused train tunnel somewhere in central Manchester where they managed to shine through a very strong line-up of other top up-and-coming bands. 24 hours after introducing ourselves and having Hey Bulldog main man Rob Manton thrust an EP in our grateful hands... They were booked.

Like many great bands before them, Hey Bulldog began as a germ of an idea of main man Rob Manton.

The multi-talented Manchester-based musician, who named his venture after the last song that the Beatles recorded in a room together, recorded the debut EP, New York City Blues, by himself with the help of a drum machine.

Before turning the project into a fully fledged band, Manton subtly started to create a buzz with the help of music websites and a variety of fanzines, leading one Manchester blog to say that, "At the time of going to press Hey Bulldog isn't a fully fledged band, haven't played a gig and we're already naming him one of the Best New Artists to look out for".

As word spread, Steve Lamacq named Hey Bulldog his Unsigned Band of the Week on his BBC Radio 6 music show and the band became favourites of XFM djs Clint Boon and John Kennedy.

Finding a pair of likeminded cohorts Matt Parry (bass) and Ben Howarth-Lees (drums) Manton turned Hey Bulldog into an outstanding live bluesy three-piece psychedelic rock band known for their musicianship and live improvisations. With bloggers drawing comparisons with everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Loop and The Black Keys.

The first single 'Numb' from the new EP of the same name has already had rave reviews, an exclusive play on XFM and more national exposure on BBC 6 music. The 'Numb'EP follows on from the 'Rip It Up' EP which also gained great support on BBC 6 Music, Amazing Radio and was picked among the highlights of the year on XFM's Xposure show.

As one Abattoir Blues review of their live show puts it'It's retro, it's contemporary, it's really f**king good!'

Bruja are a Alternative Grunge/Rock/Metal/Doom band based in South Yorkshire

Alternative Barnsley: "With a record cover, name and logo that looks so very, very Black Metal, you’d think that new Barnsley band Bruja are looking to be contenders for the Barnsley metal crown. Look closer, and bassist/vocalist Del, looks like she’s been pulled straight from a psychedelic doom band, Purson or Blood Ceremony. In fact, they actually have more in common with the 90s grunge and alt-rock scenes than anything else. And I’m more than happy to say that there is not a whiff of Nirvana wannabes about them. The scene doesn’t need endless bands sounding like Nirvana, just like we don’t need a ton of bands ripping off Arctic Monkeys. Bruja is bringing something new to Barnsley music scene. No demos. No singles. Bruja are straight in there with an eleven track album."
