► ROB DA BANK
Hailing from Southampton, and now residing on the Isle of Wight, Bestival founder and curator Rob Da Bank has been showcasing the best leftfield music for the past 20 years. 1995 saw the birth of Sunday Best in the warm glow of South London’s Tearooms Des Artistes, with the record label (Sunday Best Recordings) following 2 years later. The early days saw them release records for then unknown artists like Groove Armada, Bent and Lemon Jelly.
2002 saw Rob working on the label and his own DJing in a full time capacity, taking Sunday Best around the UK to Glastonbury, Creamfields and the Essential Festival before starting a new monthly residency at the Lock Tavern in Camden. The previous year had also seen the event become the first weekly chill out in club in Ibiza, with guests Groove Armada, Godlfrapp and Norman Cook attracting record crowds. In April 2002 Rob was asked to do a pilot for Radio One, becoming their newest DJ (alongside Chris Coco) presenting The Blue Room chill out show on Saturday mornings.
Since then the Sunday Best brand has grown and grown, hosting parties across the globe (including triumphant returns to Ibiza), as well as releasing some of the most cutting edge left field music around from artists old and new. He continues to present a weekly show on Radio One, but is probably now most well known for his Isle of Wight based festival Bestival which he runs and programmes alongside wife Josie. Each year the festival has grown bigger and presents an alternative to the mainstream commercial festivals that fill our summer programmes, resulting in it being a firm favourite amongst many clubbers and music enthusiasts.
‘Hood music from the global underground…’ is how Martelo describes his eclectic style of DJ Production and the many influences of hisyouth can be heard flowing through his sets. This self-reflection is mainly dueto his transient life-style as a child which not only changed his perspectiveon life but on DJing too. Delving through the world’s genres could be onedescription of how these influences played a massive part on his sound today.
Versatility, individuality and consciousness are just a fewdescriptions of Martelo’s skills on the wheels of steel. He seamlessly mixesgenres, nationalities and sounds that capture the attention of everyone bycombining some newer songs with a healthy sprinkling of the ‘old-schoolbangers’ and snapshots into the deeper reaches of several sub-genres andmusical cultures.
Hard work is no stranger to Martelo. At the age of 20 he wasgrafting his ASS off on the Sony BMG Street team, Djing on Promo tours forJustin Timberlake, 50 Cent, DMX and Destiny’s child and if that wasn’t enoughhe was still keeping up a weekly residency at the Ministry of Sound in Londonand frequenting on Freeze and Bassline radio-stations – Of the Pirate kind! BLIMEY!
