Local Theaters Unite to Stage August: Osage County
WATERVILLE, Maine – Aqua City Actor’s Theatre (ACAT) and the Waterville Opera House join forces to present Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize and Tony award-winning play August: Osage County. Performances on the main stage of the Waterville Opera House are on May 30-31 and June 6 7 at 7:30pm, and on June 1 and 8 at 2:00pm.
August: Osage County exposes the complicated dynamics of the Weston family, through laughter and tears. Though years have passed since the Weston sisters lived at home, family resentments lie just below the surface and stunning secrets are revealed when the family gathers, following the disappearance of its patriarch. Originally produced by Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre, the play enjoyed a highly successful run on Broadway, garnering five Tony awards, including Best Play. The New York Times called it: “Fiercely funny and bitingly sad… [a] turbo-charged tragicomedy.” According to Variety: “In Tracy Letts’ ferociously entertaining play, the American dysfunctional family drama comes roaring into the twenty-first century with eyes blazing, nostrils flaring and fangs bared, laced with corrosive humor so darkly delicious and ghastly that you’re squirming in your seat even as you’re doubled-over laughing.”
The production features an outstanding ensemble of local actors, including the ACAT debut of Andrea Itkin in the lead role of Violet Weston. The cast also includes Dee Cooke, Heidi Holst, Randolph M. Jones, Joe Klapatch, Margaret Matheson, Henry Quintal, Kathy Reardon, Bart Shattuck, Jeralyn K. Shattuck, Andrew Smith, Larry Vinal and Hannah Weston.
“We are very fortunate to be able to perform in the Opera House,” says director Michael Jinbo. “It would have been difficult, if not impossible, to mount a play of this size in the Studio Theater, our usual home. It has been fun and challenging to put together this modern masterpiece. This is a powerful play with big laughs and wrenching emotions, all played out on an operatic scale. I hope audiences will join us for the wild ride and a great ending to our 15th anniversary season!”
Ticket prices are $15 Adult and $12 Youth/Senior. Tickets can be purchased at the Waterville Opera House, by phone at 207-873-7000, or online at tickets.operahouse.org. A complimentary gala reception follows the opening night performance on May 30.
