"Acting Out: Words that Connect" directed by Tom Kramer

Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art 1701 Main Street, Peekskill, NY, USA

The following full-length play will be performed:
"Cinderella Fitzgerald" by Matty Selman, directed by Tom Kramer

"Cinderella Fitzgerald" is inspired by Antonio Santin’s fascinating and dark painting, “Yeh.” The painting portrays a young, attractive Asian woman who appears to be a victim.
The heart of the play shows a woman’s journey of discovery and a love affair in a time of personal transition. Hearts are bitterly broken when one person grows at a different pace than the other, holding the other back – a restraint as powerful, as hurtful as anything imaginable. They meet when Jay, a writer in his mid-50s, is brought to the ER and is attended to by a nurse, Anne. As the play unfolds, we see that these two are not strangers. It is a year after they’ve broken off and yet, the crux of who they were at the time of their greatest need for one another, remains the invisible binding that still holds them together.

Matty Selman is a playwright, lyricist and composer from New York City. He first came into the national spotlight when he was selected by Harvard’s Robert Brustein to write the lyrics to an adaptation of Lysistrata with music by HAIR composer, Galt MacDermot. The resulting work was presented by the American Repertory Theatre at Harvard and the Prince Theatre in Philadelphia. Selman and MacDermot also wrote Goddess Wheel and The Tinderbox. Prior to working with Galt MacDermot, Matty had collaborated with Agnes of God playwright, John Pielmeier on three musicals: Steeplechase the Funny Place, Young Rube, and Slow Dance with a Hot Pickup. Matty is the recipient of an Emmy Award for Best Service Show for writing and producing the theme and background music for Martha Stewart Living on CBS and B.Smith With Style; he wrote and produced the music and original songs for Scholastic Films The Jewel Princess. His two books for Disney based on the series The Jersey are among the best-selling books for middle school readers. Other awards include a playwriting grant from Brooklyn Arts and Cultural Association for his street opera Borough Of Braggarts and the ASCAP Popular Music Award. Matty serves on the Board of Directors of the New Harmony Project. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild and a writer/publisher member of ASCAP
