Orchestre(s), 2013 / Orchestra (s), 2013 short film color, digital Full HD. experimental film duration: 28 minutes location: Evry, France
103 actors and musicians from 6 to 98 years old
Invited by an art center in France, I made a residency for 2 years in a school. This school is in Evry, one of the 9 “new towns” in France, in the surburbs of Paris. This town was constructed in the 60’s the middle of fields, like the American model, with a commercial center in the center. The film is about music and is made in close collaboration with people of one area, called the Pyramids, wich represents 1/5 of the inhabitants. This area is basically the equivalent of the Projects in the american model, rich in many different cultures. As for the young people and the Pyramids in Evry, rap represents the style of music most listened for the last decade.I asked a rap musician to compose an original rap music. The score that results is then interpreted and re-appropriated by other musical styles, representing the cultural diversity of the city : jazz and classical music by the Conservatory, turcish traditionnal music, world music, african percusisions, rap with college students, lyrics with residents of a retirement home. I asked the five hundred children of the college to write rap texts for the instrumental music. After the residents of the retirement home wrote lyrics using the rap text for the children’s quire. The film is focused on the various musicians in action. It also presents places met in local institutions or associations. Other sequences are related to personnal installations and artistic experiments on the memory of places. For example, you will discover model of the archicture of the Pyramids projected on walls in the retirement home, as we could discover the memory of the residents.
