Funding opportunities for Professional Choreographic Development Project 2014-15

Deree - The American College of Greece 6 Gravias Street, Aghia Paraskevi, Athens, Greece

'It's often said that space is the single most valuable commodity for a dance maker....'
Richard Alston

The PROFESSIONAL CHOREOGRAPHIC DEVELOPMENT PROJECT has been established through a partnership between Kintiras Choreography Lab and the Dance Area of DEREE -the American College of Greece. The Project offers a further stage of professional development for artists who have completed Kinitiras Choreography Lab through the opportunity to engage in self directed development through the provision of free studio space and technical equipment in a supportive artistic environment.

This year and in celebration of the Kinitiras Choreography Lab 5th anniversary we are happy to announce a more extensive project. The Professional Choreographic Development Project will not only provide space and research support, selected choreographers will be able to apply for grants ranging between 200-1000 euros (depending on the nature and strength of the proposal). Priority will be given to participants who join the 5th year Lab celebration this summer whether new or returning 'labbers'.

But you MUST participate in the lab to take advantage of the benefits of the Professional Choreographic Development Project. Applications for the lab will remain open until 2nd June, there is still time to apply! Visit http://kinitiraschoreolab.blogspot.gr/ for information and application forms.

Residencies will take place throughout the year in Summer 2014, Autumn 2014, Spring 2015. Details will be published later in the Lab's website once the application process begins in late July.

APPLICATIONS WILL OPEN END OF JULY 2014. A call for proposals will be disemminated through our FACEBOOK page.

Selected choreographers will also have the opportunity to opportunity to present their choreographic and performance practice to the general dance and arts community through 'sharings' for the students at DEREE- Dance area, lecture/demonstrations and/or public performances as part of School of Fine and Performing Arts' yearly Arts Festival.

Who is it for?
-Past Kinitiras Choreography Lab participants who are interested in developing and exposing a new and innovative idea in order to further their dance practice.
-New participants in the Summer Lab, artists with a commitment to further not only their individual practice but the dance sector in Greece as a whole by taking on the challenge posed by current context, and forging new partnerships in order to help create sustainable infrastructure for dance to be able to evolve.

What will the project provide? Free facilities available including:
-Rehearsal studios
-Technical Equipment: video cameras and sound equipment
-Optional mentorship & feedback support from experienced practitioners.
-For 2014- funding support of up to 1,000 euros for selected choregraphers and their projects.

Projects will be selected through competitive application. The following criteria will inform the selection process:

(i) The applicant must have completed the Kinitiras Choreography Lab in any of it sessions (Spring 2011, Autumn 2011, Summer 2012, Summer 2013, Summer 2014).
(ii)Completion of application form, including a short research proposal of the idea they want to develop; the quality of research idea – vision, imagination and creativity of approach will be important to the selection committee.
(iii) The proposal should demonstrate the degree of challenge for the choreographer.
(iv)The proposal must establish how this is a further step in the advancement of their practice.
(v) A willingness to contribute as a visiting artists to the growing community of dance practitioners developing under the auspices of the Dance Area and the School of Fine and Performing Arts at DEREE- The American College of Greece. This may include offering open rehearsals, sharing of the results and/or the possibility to participate in the School of Fine and Performing Arts Festival.

There is no limit to the number of proposals that will be considered or places to be offered. Applications will be selected on merit and on a reasonable distribution of available resources.

The PROFESSIONAL CHOREOGRAPHIC DEVELOPMENT PROJECT has been developed as a joint venture between Kinitiras Choreography Lab and the DEREE- Dance Area to bring to Greece high quality opportunities for professional development in dance as are available in other parts of Europe (The Place Choreodrome, National Dance House Residencies in FR for example.)

The partnership acknowledges that in the current financial situation many Greek dance artists are finding it difficult, if not almost impossible, to develop professionally; opportunities to go abroad are becoming harder to consider.

Therefore Kinitiras Choreography Lab and the DEREE- Dance Area-have taken on board the mission to establish a strong partnership to bring to Greece quality professional development opportunities for dance artists through the provision of the most important resource for dance – space and facilities.
