After a much-needed solace to re-group, re-focus and re-evaluate their sound, ‘Oasis’ has been a long labour of love having been reworked throughout 2013: an album that acted as Alpines AKA Catherine Pockson and Bob Matthews’ own personal place of escape and refuge. The first single ‘Oasis’ is both accessible and a slow burner, a track described as a “turning-point” in the recording of the album.
With one of the main themes of the album the juxtaposition between joy and despair – that elusive feeling of bittersweet – ‘Stronger’ embodies this most with its personal touches about working through hard times. ‘Zero’ contrasts despairing vocals with infectious instrumentation to convey the highs and lows of young love.
From being praised by and supporting Florence Welch on tour, to being hand-picked to front fashion brand All Saints’s very first TV campaign, plus syncs for HBO’s biggest ever series ‘Boardwalk Empire’ and the legendary US show CSI, via collaborations with Maya Jane Coles, Dark Sky and the pop behemoth that is Sub Focus, Alpines seem to have seen and done it all in a very short space of time, picking up support from all possible corners of the music industry.
Expect the album ‘Oasis’ to at times, surprise, comfort and educate with its searingly honest slices of sonic tales that traverse the whole spectrum of modern-day struggles. Alpines – as they have done for themselves – will pull you through.
