As part of the Wakefield Artwalk, local artist and illustrator MattOneThree will be exhibiting his new series of work, 'Hit The North!' at Harry's Bar, Wakefield.
"Hit the North!
Mattonethree cordially invites you to delve in to his subconscious and discover what makes him northern. What differentiates him to a person from the South?
Matonethree was lovingly created in Wakefield. He has pondered about what Wakefield has given him. Mattonethree is manacled to the city.
A person from Wakefield is stewed in mining culture, marinated in rugby league and served with nice smooth bitter. Even if you weren’t a miner, don’t like rugby and don’t drink these three subjects form a cultural backdrop that shape our subconscious. At some level we are a product of environment. We are shaped within a zone of proximal development. Mattonethree can leave Wakefield but can Wakefield leave mattonethree?
As we stroll down back streets, the Rugby ground looms over; we pass Mrs. Bulmer’s house and we tread quietly and quickly by the large asylum.
We walk through arcades by the municipal pool and meet our friends under the bus station clock.
These images symbolise different areas of Wakefield that have marked mattonethree’s subconscious and created within him the psyche of a northerner.
Amateur and professional historical photography inspired all the images."
This exhibition is hosted by ArtPlace, a non-profit arts collective supporting emerging and local artists.
