The Mist creates and performs absurdist vignettes, with a blend of live music, spoken word, puppetry, movement and burlesque. We capture the Avant Garde, Russian Oberiu spirit and desire to stage something absolutely nonsensical. The performance is dark yet comic and there is often spontaneous audience collaboration.
This Mist have taken inspiration from the 1920’s Russian Oberiu Movement - created by a group of early Soviet–era avant-garde writers whose absurdist innovations made them hugely controversial in their time and landed many of them in prison. They produced texts that pointed to the hilarity, tragedy, illogical action, puppet like violence and eroticism of cruelty’s utopia; Soviet Russia. Today the writings offer an uncanny reflection of the distorted reality the poets once rejected. The ring leader, Daniil Kharms, was sent to a ‘lunatic asylum’ where he died of starvation.
