WEEK 1: FIRST FRIDAY - French Cassettes with Major Powers & the Lo-Fi Symphony
A high energy rock band with an endless propensity for fun, the French Cassettes offer up deliciously addictive tunes that feel undoubtedly like a perfect California summer. Full of upbeat tempos and care free pop vocals, come enjoy a bit of notorious Oakland sunshine manifested in youthful optimism, and melodies fit for an all out dance party of epic proportions.
Self proclaimed adventure rockers, Major Powers & The Lo-Fi Symphony seem to be able to spark a sense of both youthful optimism and complete rebellion in those that have found themselves victim to a case of…how shall I say…’boring as fuck’ adulthood. So if you’re sick of meeting deadlines, would prefer to have a few too many drinks & wake up on the lawn, and/or find yourself fantasizing about burning down the office just to get a 3 day weekend, you would be doing yourself and all of humankind a favor by turning your laptop off, heading down to Awaken Cafe, and rocking the fuck out to a bay area trio ready to dose you full of sunshine with their high energy rock n roll.
WEEK II: French Cassettes with Big Tree & Rose Droll
Bay Area crooners, Big Tree, seem well into the process of perfecting a style which is at once both fun and lighthearted, while also deeply passionate and full of intention. Easy to categorize as sweet indie pop, these kiddos bring far more to the table than such a generic label could ever describe. Offering up sweet hints of folk, blues, and even the occasional doo-wop flavor in their vocal stylings, expect lots of delightful surprises.
If there were ever an opener that you needed to be on time for, this is it folks. SF based Rose Droll will no doubt win you over with her hypnotizing vocals that feel as thin as air and yet as deep as the earth is round. Add in some insanely delicate acoustics from guitar to keyboard to percussion and you have some damn fine tunes that may haunt you for days to come.
WEEK III: French Cassettes with Fever Charm & Travis Vick
Fever Charm is a little bit electro and leans heavy on the pop, with a motivated yet easy-going attitude. Add a bit of that psychedelic rock to give these tunes a hard edge, and it keeps things from ever getting sappy. Indeed, these kiddos are all indie, and have sound just big enough to drown out anything else which may keep your summer from being as magnificent as it could be.
If you’ve been waiting for someone with a similar musical talent as Elliot Smith to arise and make himself known, you’ve got to check out Travis Vick. Reminiscent of the beautiful, dynamic, quick-paced, complex finger picked guitar, juxtaposed with an at once both relaxed + emotionally tense vocal style, this guy is sure to hold your attention. But don't trust me, come see for yourself peeps.
WEEK IV: French Cassettes with The She's + Black Cobra Vibers
The She's combine doo-wop harmonies, with a rock and roll grime that kicks some dirt onto those poodle skirts. A creative interplay of the sweetness of 50’s pop with an often growling guitar produce a sound that’s uniquely contemporary. You may crush out when you see this all girl group, but you're gonna fall in love when you hear them.
What could possibly sound more dangerous than a mix of two deadly snakes?? And yet the only thing poisonous about the Black Cobra Vipers is the infectious funkified rock n roll that slithers it's way from the stage into your earholes. So, put on your heart shaped sunglasses, grab some glitter, and come dance your way into a down and dirty funk oblivion.w
