The EU elections have given us important information, which should open our eyes to what is happening around us. Everywhere in Europe, extreme Right wing groups are gaining more support and more power in decision making. Political representatives at an international level are openly promoting policies which are racist, which discriminate against women, and which deny rights to HBTQ people. These people are using fear and segregation to manipulate our society into a state where control and violence are normal and acceptable, where there is "us" and "them". And if you are "them" you no longer have any rights and instead your very existence is defined by the state.
This is not the first time. Our grandparents have seen this before. It's in the history books. And it always leads to violent conflict, to oppression, to dehumanisation. And of course someone, somewhere stands to gain from it all.
So what can we do about it? History shows us that the most important weapons used by these groups are seperation and alienation. If we can be manipulated into fearing, hating or distancing ourselves from a part of our community, they have won. And it's enough that we are afraid to be seen with certain people or groups of people. it's enough that we are afraid to stand up for what is right.
So here is my suggestion. Take every chance you get to celebrate diversity, friendship and freedom.
What does that mean? Some practical examples;
Join a Pride parade
Hold your own Pride party/parade/festival where ever you live
Hold a street party
Hold a "Take back the Night" march
Whatever is beautiful and special for your culture, create an event where you can share it.
Dance in the town square with as many people as possible
Hold a Peace and Love demonstration
Basically, stand up and be seen, raise your voice and be heard, use every possibility to build connection, to become neighbours and friends, to celebrate the fact that we share this beautiful place with so many others.
This "event" is a place for inspiration, to share your ideas and happenings with others, to get support and to connect as many people as possible in creating a world where we are all connected, and where we will not be silenced by fear.
Please share this with as many others as you can, add information about any event that celebrates diversity, freedom and friendship, and let us know when you need support.
As the Native Americans say, for all my relations, thank you
