We are proud to announce the most highly anticipated event of the drop year – the legend that is Sir Norman Jay!
He is arguably one of the finest and most respected DJ’s in the world today whose talents and many years of dedicated service to his profession have earned him an MBE for “deejaying and services to music”, by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll in 2002. A fitting tribute in recognition of his many outstanding musical achievements and invaluable contributions to music in a career spanning decades.
Born in Notting Hill, London, he started displaying his deejaying talents at the tender age of 8! He became hooked on 60’s blu beat, ska and rock steady reggae, and later the r&b soul sounds of the likes of Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and James Brown. This childhood musical experience would have a profound lasting effect on the young Jay - cementing his love of all kinds of Black Music forever.
By the late 70’s he had become an avid follower of contemporary Afro-American music styles including funk, soul and jazz fusion. He made numerous trips to New York where he experienced the rise of disco, and played many of the most famous venues of the time, whilst forging lasting personal friendships with the likes of the legendary Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, Davis Morales, Tony Humphries and Louis Vega – years before most of them had ever been heard of in the UK.
Upon his return to the UK, he built the now legendary ‘Good Times Sound System’ alongside his brother Joey, and started up Pirate Kiss FM radio station, which later became Kiss 100FM. Norman went on to pioneer many of todays leading DJ household names, including his original partner and protégé –Judge Jules. It was this initial DJ partnership formed in 1986 that saw him playing a mainly urban soundtrack from the 70’s and 80’s and mixing it up with the brand new sound of House Music.
The 90’s saw Jay responsible for kick starting the careers in the UK of original US dance divas such as Jocelyn Brown, Chaka Khan, En Vogue, Sharon Redd, Loleatta Holloway To name a few….
Jay plays at a host of clubs, festivals and parties in just about every major city in the world, with regular tours of Australia, USA, Canada, Japan, South Africa, the Middle East and the Far East, and is without a doubt the DJ choice of the celebrity set. He has played for Sir Mick Jagger (at his 50th birthday party), Robert Di Nero, Michael Caine, George Michael, Thierry Henry (at his wedding), Will Smith, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Jamiroquai, the Beckhams, and Paul Wellar to name a few. He curated the only Dance Music stage for a 60,000 capacity sell out event celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, and was even invited to play at President Obama’s inauguration celebrations.
