From the very first images, Heli exposes with brutal realism the undercurrent of modern Mexico's most prevalent continuing problem, the war on drug trafficking. A young girl, herself involved in the necessary occupation of drug trafficker, falls in love for the first time with a police cadet who is also struggling to survive amidst the chaos of the predicament which has defined a nation. “Destined to traumatize… lends this year’s Cannes competition its first authentic whiff of scandal.” -Scott Foundas, Variety
“Heli is dispassionately filmed, the crime story recounted with a largely forensic matter-of-factness, although stylistic flourishes and deliberate pacing subvert the realism and load it with an eerie, dream-like quality” -Jonathan Romney, Screen International
