FAT PAUL PRESENTS

THE FLIES
"LIKE THE VELVETS ON A DAVID LYNCH SET" - NME

The Flies formed sometime around 2003 in a very loose and incremental way when production team, ‘The Insects’ (Bob Locke and Tim Norfolk) joined forces with vocalist/musician Sean Cook.

Cook had been a key player in Spiritualized (notably on their seminal record, ‘Ladies and Gentlemen we are Floating in Space’) as well as Lupine Howl and currently plays with Elizabeth Fraser and Massive Attack. The Insects are highly regarded as Emmy award winning soundtrack writers for BBC natural history documentaries, films such as “Creep” and “Owning Mahoney”, and TV series such as ‘Wire In The Blood”.

In 2007 The Flies released the critically acclaimed LP, “All Too Human” described as…

"Like The Velvets on a David Lynch set." NME

" A lush, atmospheric collection of songs that deal in "sweet release" and sexual obsession, over ghostly, classic hooks." Dave Simpson - THE GUARDIAN

"In these pick and mix musical times with the steady demise of the album, LPs as 'works of art' are increasingly rare. Fortunately there are a handful of bands that refuse to succumb to the MP3 downloading whitewash. Bristol three-piece, The Flies have created an album that is as much an artistic entity as it is a collection of individually compelling songs." Emma Padley - BBC.CO.UK

"The Flies have injected a breath of fresh air into music...the best UK debut album of the year." XFM

Songs from the ‘All Too Human’ LP went on to be used on several films, TV shows and adverts including Roland Joffe’s ‘You and I’, ‘Wire in the Blood’, and ads for L’Oreal.

Around 2008, Sean and The Insects began working with Andy Spaceland on The Flies second LP, ‘Pleasure Yourself’.

Andy is a producer and musical collaborator, who had worked with both Sean and the Insects in his previous band, ‘Alpha’. Andy is also currently working on projects with Butch Vig, and Mark Stewart (The Pop Group)

As the LP developed, Andy took on an increasingly pivotal role in the writing and production of The Flies songs. After many late night sessions spanning several years, and in-between many other projects, Cook, Spaceland, Locke and Norfolk (together with contributions from long time collaborator and drummer, Damon Reece - Massive Attack, Spiritualized, Elizabeth Fraser) completed ‘Pleasure Yourself’ at the end of 2013.

‘Pleasure Yourself’ is due for release in Summer 2014. It is preceded by the single, ‘One Day My Baby Will Leave You’ which will be released in March 2014 through Library Music Recordings.

Description
'Like the Velvets on a David Lynch set ..' NME

"The result is a lush, atmospheric collection of songs that deal in "sweet release" and sexual obsession, over ghostly, classic hooks."
— Dave Simpson, THE GUARDIAN

"The Bristol Sound's not dead, it's just chilling out. Or, in the case of this debut from The Flies, creeping around the seedier back- streets in search of sensual gratification."
— Andy Gill, THE INDEPENDENT

"The Flies have injected a breath of fresh air into music...the best UK debut album of the year."
— XFM

"In these pick and mix musical times with the steady demise of the album, LPs as 'works of art' are increasingly rare. Fortunately there are a handful of bands that refuse to succumb to the MP3 downloading whitewash. Bristol three-piece The Flies, have created an album that is as much an artistic entity as it is a collection of individually compelling songs."
— Emma Padley, BBC.CO.UK

"Dark, dirty, drugged and downright sexy 'The Flies' manage to walk a very thin line between tried and tested nights of mid-nineties house party excess' and an incredible talent to draw a very relevant present into a fast approaching future."
— GIGWISE

"I can honestly say that there is nothing else quite like this out there in our cosmos, it's incredible originality is only matched by its mesmerising allure and polished perfection. Whether smoking yourself horizontal or vertical and rising, whether entering or about to be entered, this is the album to do it to." ENTERTAINMENT FOCUS.COM

"If a sedated Jeff Buckley fronted Portishead (in front of an audience consisting entirely of former members of The Velvet Underground) The Flies would be a band further up the bill who were even better." THE COMMUNION.CO.UK

"The Flies sound is what the music industry has desperately been begging for since the rise of soft indie music, which produced an overflow of copycat substandard groups. We are still in the hangover era of The Libertines, so it's about time that someone shook things up a bit. Thank God someone has had the balls to do it!" MUSIC-NEWS.COM

"An effortlessly cool, charismatically calm and gracefully catchy record...The Flies musical heritage is nothing short of impeccable" I LIKE MUSIC.COM

“ "If talent alone decided the music chart positions, then The Flies would easily hold the record for being top of the charts for the longest time" ”
— WELIKECLUBBING.COM

"Sounds like one of the classics that should have been in everyone's collection for the past thirty years...[The Flies] come across as a gloriously spaced out version of The Doors. SUBBACULTCHA

"A darkly haunting but timelessly beautiful collection of songs" SOUNDFREAK.CO.UK

" …same atmospheric, experimental approach to rock 'n' roll invented by the Velvet Underground, Walking On The Sand is a brooding slab of '60 psychedelic desert rawk … Makes The Jesus & Mary Chain sound like Black Lace!" MSN

"All Too Human is a dark, brooding and classy collection that deserves to be heard" — ENTERTAINMENTMANCHESTER.COM
