Anne Midgette, New York Times

_________________________________________________________

Since it was founded in 1946, The Vienna Chamber Orchestra (Wiener Kammerorchester) has become one of the most important factors in the musical life of one of the world's music capitals, enriching it with its concert season at the Konzerthaus. The orchestra's first chief conductor was Italian pianist and conductor Carlo Zecchi, with Yahudi Menuhin and Sándor Végh as the Orchestra’s guest conductors. The concept of an artist in the double role of a soloist and conductor was continued by Philippe Entremont, who led the Orchestra from 1976 to 1991. In May 2008, Stefan Vladar, distinguished pianist and conductor, was appointed chief conductor. Under his leadership, the Orchestra produced two important projects during the 2009/2010 season in Vienna – performances of Beethoven's concertos in Konzerthaus and Mozart's piano concertos in Theater an der Wien, with Vladar in the double role of conductor and soloist. The less commonly known fact is that the Vienna Chamber Orchestra conducted by Ernst Märzendofer was the first orchestra to make the integral recording of Joseph Haydn’s symphonies.

“Magnificent performance of Haydn's 'The Creation' – The Vienna Chamber Orchestra and Choir led by Stefan Vladar, who conducted with almost volcanic temperament, revealed numerous incredible paths that led us through the work laden with irresistible liturgical zest.“
Balduin Sulzer, Kronenzeitung

Distinguished Austrian pianist and conductor Stefan Vladar is still the youngest pianist to win the prestigious Beethoven Competition in Vienna: he was only 19. He wanted to broaden his musical horizons and took up conducting in the 1990s. From 2002 to 2006 he was the chief conductor of the Grosses Orchester Graz and in 2008 was appointed chief conductor of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. He has made numerous recordings for prestigious labels such as Naxos, Sony, and Harmonia Mundi and has collaborated with the world’s top artists, such as Yehudi Menuhin, Seiji Ozawa, Claudio Abbado, Heinrich Schiff, Julian Rachlin, and Bo Skovhus.

“Stefan Vladar's incredibly exciting performance of Schumann's Carnaval left the audience breathless.“
Anne Midgette, New York Times
