Whittington Castle site has been occupied since Pre-historic times. There is still evidence of an Ironage settlement on the site and it has been occupied every since. The Normans choose the site to build an impressive castle to use as a power base, during the Tudor period the castle came into Royal ownership for a brief period. A light skirmish occurred at Whittington during the English Civil War and eventually the grounds and outer bailey became a Farm while much of the stone was used to help build the main road outside.
During the First World War the Castle became
a laundry and took in washing
from Park Hall Army Camp. It has also been a library,
restaurant and is now a historic visitor attraction.
The Castle has witnessed over 2000 years of history
and for our Multi Period event, visitors will be able to
time travel through history.
From a medieval encampment to
to Napoleonic Riflemen to the WWII homefront
There will be stalls selling
modern day crafts as well as period items, and refreshments are
available on site.
