Palio of the Archers 2014

This medieval reenactment has its roots in 1339 when Pescia came under Florentine control and took off the celebrations in honor of St. Dorothy protector of the city. Since that time were organized for centuries, folk festivals and horse games up to 1677, but resumed in 1978, in view of the time, the auctions and the horses they preferred the use of bows and arrows to compete even if they are always the four historic districts the city Ferraia, St. Francis, St. Michael and St. Mary, mentioned in the municipal statutes since 1340. During these nine days the city takes on a charming dress with the streets and squares of the old town decorated with the flags of the four districts and contenders a rich program of initiatives.

The event will be Sunday, August 31 from the early 12th trophy "Ball and Basket" from 17 hours in Piazza Mazzini when the youngest of the four districts will compete in this game which will be followed at 21 before the final, a apericena.

From Monday 1 to Thursday, September 4 lucky dinners will be held in the headquarters of the districts starting from Ferraia, then St. Michael, St. Francis and finally Santa Maria. A real culinary challenge in the challenge, however, to propose the best dishes of the area.

Friday 5 to 20:30 in the Cathedral is scheduled for the first event that announces the 37th Palio City of Pescia with the blessing ceremony of Gonfaloni of the four districts and the Palio that will go to the district winners. Then comes the most awaited day, Sunday, September 7th in the tournament which will take place the archers' 37th Palio City of Pescia. " It begins at 10 am in the four wards and in Piazza Mazzini with the announcement of the tender to the city by the herald, accompanied by musicians.
At 15, the cortege will leave town with over 600 people in costumes inspired by the dress that s'indossavano between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The procession after passing through the streets of the old town will come to Piazza Mazzini, where, at 17, will be held the race.

The Palio will be transported to the streets in a chariot decorated and pulled by a horse as a tradition under the escort of four halberdiers attentive to the command of a captain.
After the arrival of all the extras is expected to follow the performances and solemn salute the flag wavers and then start the race at the command of the so-called "master of the field."

Four archers to ward equipped with medieval arches in shape, measuring about three rounds of shots over a distance of 18 meters. In the first targets to be hit are four (three of the diameter of 20 cm and one 10 cm) and each archer has four arrows.

In the second race you must hit three targets of 15 cm and a 7. The last and most exciting race there is only one arrow available. The target is only 10 cm in diameter but assigns as many as 60 points.

A competition antique flavor that becomes more exciting and uncertain, and often only the last arrow you will know the name of the ward who will win the coveted Palio. The event is organized by the municipality of Pescia in cooperation with the League of the Rioni and is under the patronage of the Region of Tuscany.
