In the beginning there was JACK and JACK had a groove and from this groove came the groove of all grooves. With the news of Wankelmut already on the horizon it’s time for another very special visitor to join us at the house of JACK. On Friday April 11th the incredible Fritz Kalkbrenner will come to Belfast to play the renowned Limelight!
It’s no secret that Fritz is a full-fledged soul boy. With a voice like his, how could things have turned out any other way? Soul music is the foundation of all his musical endeavours, an emotional and aesthetic thread that he weaves through his music, soul, in fact, holds together his diverse musical influences like hip hop, techno and house.
In the autumn of 2008 his finest piece of work appeared on the soundtrack to the movie Berlin Calling, the first project Fritz and his brother Paul worked on together. It made the charts, and both Fritz and his voice gained international recognition. Not only was his first solo production practically in the bag, but he also found likeminded individuals in the heads of the Suol music label, Chopstick and Johnjon, hip hop aficionados who immediately recognised Fritz’s artistic potential. The three of them quickly agree to start working on a maxi single and then go on to make a first album.
While his 2010 debut album Here Today Gone Tomorrow was a sign that Fritz was beginning to move out from the shadow of his brother, his 2012 LP is a definitive step into the spotlight. Since its release last year ‘Sick Travellin’ has been incredibly well received. It’s something that is marked out by its own unique style with a tracklisting adorned with instant classics. Tracks like Get A Life and Little By Little hit that vocal sweet spot while his efforts on Monte Rosa and Square Heart are most certainly dancefloor weapons. With tour dates in everywhere from Pacha, Ibiza to New York City its clear anticipation for the new live Fritz Show is sky high. This is one night not to be missed!
