Aftermath Ep.01: Cataclysm

Eiger Music Studios Eiger Music Studios, New Craven Gate Industrial Estate, Leeds, West Yorkshire, Regno Unito

Aftermath is a new underground hard dance night, started in Leeds in 2013. We aim to introduce music, producers, and DJs to new audiences. Our focus is on quality music first and foremost.

Expect to hear german trance, tech trance, tech dance, hard tech, hard techno, acid trance, acid techno, and hard dance.

With our pilot night successfully completed last November, we're (long!) overdue Episode 01 of Aftermath. We were going to do something sooner than this, but a number of annoying obstacles and hitches stopped us from doing so. Ever-adaptable, we've decided than if we couldn't do something SOONER, then we should do something BIGGER.

Hard trance and other related forms of hard dance are a passion for the entire Aftermath crew. The last few years - and especially 2013 - have seen an incredible momentum building for a number of artists and labels that we hold dear, with a number of the smaller genres starting to gain a real identity and traction within the scene. One of Aftermath's key aims is to help introduce some of this fantastic music to new audiences, so we'd always planned on a headliner from this part of the musical spectrum for our second event. We have an ever-growing wishlist of producers and DJs under consideration, but the more we thought about it, the more we discussed it, the more one name kept barging its way to the top of the pile, grabbing us by the scruff of the neck and refusing to let go: DARK BY DESIGN.

One of our other key aims, running in tandem with the first commandment, is to make sure to give sufficient exposure to DJs and producers newer to the scene, to showcase the future of hard dance and to demonstrate how much innovation and creativity is happening right now. From time to time these acts may be relative unknowns, familiar only to hard dance aficionados, and you may have to take us on the faith of our impeccable taste that they're as good as we say they are (but they will be); for this event however, we've managed to pick up one of the most well-known fresh faces in hard dance, a young man who has had an absolutely *storming* 2013: DANNY WILLIAMSON.

Episode 01 will also be our first event in Eiger Studios, something we're very much looking forward to. We welcome any feedback after the event on the venue (or any other aspect of the night!) as ultimately we're looking for a long-term home for Aftermath, and we'll keep going until you guys are happy and we feel at home. (But we have a very good feeling that this may be the start of something beautiful!) For anyone who hasn't been to Eiger Studios before it's only a short journey from the city centre - a short taxi ride or about 20 minutes' walk from the train station, depending on how sensible your footwear is - see the bottom of the event page for more travel info!

Dark by Design

One of the true towering figures of the UK hard dance scene, Dark By Design needs *no* introduction, but fully deserves one: since crashing his way onto the production scene in 2002 and ending up with a slew of releases on such keystone labels as Nukleuz, Goodgreef, Tranzlation and Tidy, Gaz forced his way into the collective underground consciousness after stepping out of the studio and behind the decks, racking up a colossal number of club and festival appearances over the years - and the rest, as they say, was history.

Or, more to the point, the rest was the future - despite well over a decade in the industry, Dark By Design's productions remain on (and in some cases, beyond) the cutting edge of hard dance, pushing and driving the boundaries of multiple genres in a way that few artists would ever hope to achieve. 2013 was another stellar year, featuring epic collaborations with DJ Husband and Chris Tait, original releases and a slew of remixes appearing on (highly Aftermath-recommended!) labels like Gearbox and Absolution Digital.

We are in equal parts highly excited and extremely honoured to have such an important figure headline our night, and fully expect you to take advantage of this rare opportunity to catch him play in Leeds!

Danny Williamson

From an act who's got a well-established history we move to our second headliner - a young man at the opposite end of the scale who's just starting on what is set to be a long and distinguished career in hard dance. Seemingly appearing out of nowhere at the start of 2013 (though he had technically sneaked a couple of releases out under the radar before then), Danny Williamson first lit up on the Aftermath crew's radar after Stockton started relentlessly rinsing "Drum Tech" (a collaboration with Havok), and he has stayed there ever since.

Danny hit the ground flat-out *sprinting* with a string of quality releases that drew praise, critical acclaim and - astonishingly, for a relatively unknown artist - success after success on the trackitdown charts, eventually notching up *EIGHT* No.1s by the end of the year - and deservedly so. With airtight production skills, a musical maturity that belies his years, support from labels like Gearbox, Absolution Digital, Kiddfectious, Rave Me and Analogue is Dead, and the prospect of further tantalising collaborations with other rising stars (Splinta, Ric Henderson - to name but a few), the sky is the limit for Danny - and we wouldn't be surprised to see him go even further. We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have the chance to catch Danny at this stage of his career and can't wait to present him you guys at Ep.01!

We're lucky to have some real talent in the area, which we'll be hoping to showcase over the months and years to come - though AudioHazard should be a familiar face to at least some of our Leeds-based punters. Best known for playing hardstyle (as you'll find on his SoundCloud), AudioHazard also does a fine trade in hard techno, which he'll be getting a chance to play at Ep.01. Ed combines his (frankly scary) understanding of the music he loves with a level of technical ability that's as entertaining to watch as it is to listen to. Infectiously enthusiastic, we expect big things from Ed - watch this space!

Hy-Phen should be another recognisable face for regular members of the local scene - mostly on the other side of the decks, in the middle of the dancefloor - but we hope you'll be as pleased as we were to discover that she does as good a job behind them as she does in front of them. With a wide-ranging taste in music, a keen ear and a flexible and adaptable approach in the crafting of her sets, we're looking forward to seeing what Dom has in store to help us open up the night!

And of course, the line-up wouldn't be complete without our resident...
