American Hiking Society 1424 Fenwick Ln, Downtown Silver Spring, Silver Spring, MD, USA

Project Description: Volunteers will be working on trail clearance and correction on the Military Road Trail, one of Village Creek State Park’s most popular trails. This trail contains a section that is part of the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail. Tasks will include correcting trail creep, widening the path, clearing the trail corridor, and correcting erosion issues.

Hosting Organization: Arkansas State Parks

Day Hiking or Backpacking: Day Hiking Up to 2 Miles Per Day

Minimum Age: 18

Area and Attractions: At 6,911 acres, Village Creek is Arkansas's second largest state park in land area and offers 30 miles of trails. Explore the unique geology, topography, and unusual plant communities of Crowley's Ridge, a landform of rolling hills in eastern Arkansas's Mississippi Alluvial Plain. It is covered with a lush, mixed hardwood forest. Crew members are welcome to join the park interpreter for a guided hike or a tour at Parking Archaeological Museum State Park. There will be two half days set aside to explore the park and surrounding area. The park is an hour away from Memphis and Jonesboro, both of which contain a variety of opportunities for cultural experiences.

Accommodations: Car-Camping Tent Sites

Accommodations Description: Volunteers will be staying in car camping tent sites. The campsites have water and 30 amp electric hookups. A bathhouse with toilets and showers is located in the campground. Food and cookware will be provided and cooking will be done in a full kitchen. The park can supply a few tents based on need. Volunteers should bring their own tent (or camper), sleeping bag, pad, cup/bowl, eating utensils, and personal items.

Climate Information: November in Arkansas involves cool nights and mornings with temperatures rising during the day. Expect temperatures ranging from 60-75 degrees during the day and dropping into the 40s at night. Volunteers are encouraged to bring rain gear, since rain showers are common during this time of year.
