American Hiking Society 1424 Fenwick Ln, Downtown Silver Spring, Silver Spring, MD, USA

Project Description: Volunteers will be focusing on building bridges over several intermittent creeks and a bridge/boardwalk across a brook and associated wetland. Additional projects include building a series of steps on a few steep slopes. Champlain Area Trails creates hiking trails that link our communities, connect people with nature, and promote economic vitality. Black Kettle Trail is a popular trail used almost daily by a local elementary school as it includes several interpretive signs along its route through a variety of natural communities and a scenic overlook.

Area and Attractions: New York's Adirondack Park is a 6 million acre mountainous mixture of public and private land with the most intact forest in the northeast, thousands of lakes, and miles of streams. It is a year-round recreational mecca with trails, canoeing, biking, sailing, skiing, and skating. The Champlain Valley, a.k.a the "Adirondack Coast," is the eastern portion of the park with 120 miles of shoreline on Lake Champlain, the 6th largest lake in the U.S. It features a beautiful landscape of farms, forests, low mountains, wetlands, historic hamlets, and breathtaking views of Lake Champlain, the Adirondack High Peaks, and Vermont

Accommodations: Cabins

Accommodations Description: Volunteers will be staying at Camp Pok-O-MacCready, a summer camp with year-round facilities for visiting school classes to learn about the outdoors. There will be shared rooms with bunk beds, hot water, and bathroom facilities. Meals will be prepared by the camp staff and served in dining area. Volunteers should bring a sleeping bag and personal gear.

Climate Information: The first week in October is near the peak of the beautiful fall foliage. The temperature during the days can range between 50 degrees to 70 degrees. Evenings can be between 35 degrees and 55 degrees. The days are usually sunny but there may be occasional rain that rarely lasts for the entire day.

Travel Information: Airport pickup will be provided from Burlington International Airport.
