Trip #15 Modoc National Forest, CA

American Hiking Society 1424 Fenwick Ln, Downtown Silver Spring, Silver Spring, MD, USA

Project Description: Clear Lake trail work will focus on removal of micro trash, naturalizing impacted areas around Clear Lake, and bridge repair. If time allows, work in this area would continue to the junction of Poison Flat and Mill Creek trails. Work at this junction will focus on building rock cairns and brushing to improve way finding. Bear Camp Flat trail work will involve tree removal from trail corridor and brushing of limbs and vegetation along trail. Reestablishing trail along a steep hillside trail section is also planned.

Area and Attractions: Bear Camp Flat offers stunning views of Eagle Basin and Surprise Valley and is composed of White Fir, Ponderosa, and Jeffery Pine forests with Mountain Mahogany and sage brush ground cover. Clear Lake is mostly white fire and ponderosa pine forest. The area beyond the lake, Poison Flat, opens into a sagebrush setting with views of the southern portion of the wilderness area. At the end of a hard work day, volunteers can fish and swim at Blue Lake or unwind at a nearby hot spring.

Accommodations: Car-Camping Tent Sites

Accommodations Description: Volunteers will tent camping at Patterson Guard Station. Full kitchen with gas range, fridge and sink with hot water heater. Counter prep space and dining room table. All kitchen gear provided. Couches, seats and porch plus fire pit and picnic table area provide a variety of locations to unwind at the end of the day. Solar showers will be available onsite during the week and showers available at the end of the week. Vault toilets will be available during the week. Volunteers should bring their own tent, sleeping bag, pad, eating utensils/Tupperware/bowl and personal items.

Climate Information: Bear Camp Flat has consistent forest canopy cover on north and east facing slopes. Clear Lake loop has considerable mid-day exposure. Temperatures can be expected to vary from the 90
