Trip #45 Santa Fe National Forest, NM

American Hiking Society 1424 Fenwick Ln, Downtown Silver Spring, Silver Spring, MD, Stati Uniti

Project Description: Volunteers will be working on removing blow downs with crosscut saws, repairing trail tread creep, construction of rock cairns, construction of rock retaining walls where needed, and sign installation along the Turkey Spring Trail. The trail is an important connector and serves those that choose to make a hiking loop through National Forest lands into National Park lands. The trail offers magnificent vistas into Sanchez Canyons, the Rio Grande Valley, and north to the Sangre De Cristo Mountains just above Santa Fe.

Hosting Organization: US Forest Service

Day Hiking or Backpacking: Backpacking 3 Miles to Basecamp (Day Hiking Up to 0.5 Miles Per Day)

Work Level: Difficult

Minimum Age: 18

Area and Attractions: The project area is within the Dome Wilderness on the Santa Fe National Forest. Turkey Spring Trail is located on the Parajito Plateau above the central Rio Grande Valley. The view from the top of this majestic mesa is stunning. As one hikes the Turkey Spring trail one may stubble upon an ancient artifact or two or spy an outline of an ancient pueblo if one has a keen eye. Your guide will point out these fantastic features as the hike progresses atop the high mesa. Volunteers will also visit Bandelier National Monument.

Accommodations: Primitive Tent Sites

Accommodations Description: Volunteers will be staying in primitive tent sites. The project camp site will be in the open and will have splendid night time views of the valley below; the lights of Albuquerque to the south and the lights of Santa Fe to the north, and clear site of the night sky above. Showers available at end of week. Volunteers should bring their own tent, sleeping bag, pad, cup/bowl, eating utensils, and personal items.

Climate Information: The temperatures of late May and June are perfect for trail work on the mesa. The area will be shaded until the early afternoon by the canyon walls above the trail. The skies may have some clouds but are mostly sunny, though there may be an unlikely surprise shower. It is always best to have layers to peel off.

Travel Information: Airport pickup provided from Albuquerque International Sunport.
