Trip #23 Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, GA

American Hiking Society 1424 Fenwick Ln, Downtown Silver Spring, Silver Spring, MD, USA

Project Description: Working alongside experienced Mountain High Hiker trail maintainers, volunteers will be working on rehabilitating the treadway of the Miller Trek Trail, a 4.6 mile long hiking trail. Tasks include significant digging to re-establish the proper side-hill and out slope configuration where the existing treadway has failed. Water control will be improved by establishing new rolling dips and improving existing water bars where needed.

Area and Attractions: Volunteers will be staying in the Brasstown Valley in the heart of the north Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains. The area is described as a land of waterfalls, scenic mountain beauty, and friendly people. Volunteers can look forward to a guided hike or adventure to one of many points of interest, including Brasstown Bald (the highest point in Georgia), Tallulah Gorge State Park, local waterfalls, day hikes along the Appalachian Trail in Georgia or North Carolina, river rafting, or tubing. Volunteers could also drive about 100 miles to Atlanta, Georgia.

Accommodations: Cabins

Accommodations Description: Volunteers will be staying in a cabin provided by the Brasstown Valley Resort and Mountain High Hikers. The sleeping capacity of the cabin is nine. It is possible that the last night stay (Friday night) will be in the homes of Mountain High Hikers members due to unavailability of cabins gratis on the Friday night of the weekend. The log cottage with a mountaineering motif. Set in the woods, the cottage has four bedroom, accommodating two people each, with one sleeping area in the parlor area. Each cottage features large, covered wooden decks, and many include wood-burning fireplaces. A variety of layouts exist, but each cottage boasts of a parlor, with a large wood burning fireplace, kitchen with cook-top stove, microwave oven, basic cookware, dishwasher, coffee maker, refrigerator and gas grill, a furnished living room, half-bath, and a dining room table. Each cottage guest room is similar in size, furnishings and amenities to those in the lodge. Volunteers should bring their own personal gear.

Climate Information: May temperatures average around a high of 75 degrees and a low of 50 degrees. May averages 4.25 inches of rain per month. Scattered showers and thunder storms cannot be ruled out.
