First of all we will visit the Oramala fortress, located at about 700 m. above sea level from which the Malaspina ruled their domains stretching from the Po Valley to the Tirrenean Sea from 10th to 13th century. Following a scenic path we will then descend to the medieval hamlet of Varzi, which became the capital town of Malaspinas’ domains in the 13th century. Along this trail fields and small farms are interspersed with mixed forests of chestnuts, oaks and hornbeam ash trees where it is still possible to see wild deer and horses in pasture.
When we arrive in Varzi we will learn about the town’s ancient tradition of salami producing at a historic shop and have a buffet lunch in their tasting rooms located in a restored warehouse overlooking the walkway of the 13th century town walls (Menù: mix salumery of the house, home-made rice pie, Varzi-style ravioli - pasta squares stuffed with stewed meat -, almonds cake; mineral water, Oltrepò Pavese quality Wines)
After lunch, we will go on a guided tour of Varzi. The building of Varzi started in 1275, the year in which the Malaspinasleft their fortress of Oramala to live more comfortably in their castle near the river Staffora. In a few years time the tiny village was turned into a rich town devoted to commerce, crafts and services for travelling merchants and pilgrims. The southern quarters of the medieval hamlet boast a unique architecture where three rows of limestone archways run one over another to follow the castle’s hill slope and exploit every single inch available for building
